Manual gears are fun to drive sometimes.

My '88 Accord is auto.

The 40 ft Gillig Phantoms I've been driving today and yesterday are automatic (THANK GOD!!!!) as if they aren't already difficult enough to drive.

I can't drive a stick very well, some cars better than others.

I drive an auto, the only things sticks are good is for performance cars. You get a luxury car (which I like, such as Navigator and Escalade) you get an auto. I would rather see the sights and change radio stations and CDs than be bothering with changing the gears.

I drive a stick on my Mazda Protege. I love it. I wouldn't want anything else.

Automatics break down faster, I think. I'd rather pay $2000 less for a stick, and not worry about the transmission.

Automatic, it so useful when stuck in traffic or when you have to stop-and-go quite often.

I drive with a stick. I will however continue to drive a stick such as the Jeep Wrangler.

My dad taught me how to drive a stick in his car. Problem with a stick is that you can stall the car if you don't know any clue on driving a manual.

What's interesting is that the line between manual and automatic transmissions are starting to blur.

Two major developments are causing this:

1. The development of continuously variable tranmission (CVT) automatics that uses a metal drive belt or metal drive chain moving between two variable-length pulleys. CVT's offer the convenience of automatics but with manual-like performance. Honda has been offering this on the Civic HX coupe since 1997 (I drive a 1998 Civic HX CVT coupe and love it), and Audi this fall will offer the Multitronic CVT on the A4 front-wheel drive models powered by the V6 engine in the USA market.

2. The development of computer-controlled manual transmissions with no manual clutch. This allows you to manually shift gears without having to press the clutch, and also gives the option of automatic gear shifting, too. Pioneered by Ferrari on the F355/F360 models, BMW will soon offer a very sophisticated version of this on their Sequential Manual Gear (SMG) system that will be fitted to a large number of 2002 model-year M3's.

Would prefer and auto for traffic but love my manual in the mx5. A really light short shifter that is so easy to drive.

The car I had before was Grand Cherokee - thank god that great hulking thing was an Auto.

The car before that was a Ford Capri (Mecury Capri in the USA) and it had an auto.

The car before that Honda Civic was an Auto.

The car before that Nissan 280ZX was a manual.

The car before that a Prelude was a combination auto/manual thing. Weird car to drive though!

Cheers,

mb
