I have to say it depends on the individual. When i had an extra 20 lbs. to loose i started running each night for roughly 30 minutes with varying speed and incline. However within a week i was up to over an hour a night... it just depends... my advice, listen to your body but dont be afraid to push yourself.

you know you dont have to run....if you run, you might lose muscle as well, this usually puts you in the cardio zone, but if you walk, your body will use fat as the energy source first, rather than muscle and fat for immediate replenishment...
walk for a hour a day on the treadmill, it's not as easy as it sounds, go 5km an hour...

Quoting HAWK21M (Thread starter): What would be the normal duration of Treadmill run for a 3 kgs overweight guy.
If you're not used to running, just start slow at around 3.5-4 mph(don't know what that is in kph) with only about 1% grade. If you use 0%, the treadmill doesn't give you quite the exact workout as real running. But, when you put 1% grade on it, its almost identical. Do this for about 30-45 minutes. Then, later on, you can increase the speed and decrease the overall time.....but do try to stay at or around 30 minutes. This will give you a good workout and a good sweat.
Treadmill's are great for people who aren't used to running very much. If you start outside at first, you're a little more prone to injury and loss of motivation. Getting in a gym to run on the treadmill can be a good start for those who don't have a workout routine yet.

I do run outside,But in a place like Mumbai[Bombay] its tough on the roads considering the traffic. And the Parks are crowded so one has to slow down frequently.Hence the Treadmill option.
I run a lot,but someone said running reduces Muscle too.If thats the case then Walking fast would be preffered to loose Fat.
Although 3kgs should burn off in a month I feel.
