For me it would have to be the time I was at the grocery store and they were giving out samples of hamburgers with horseradish chedder cheese. I put a piece in my mouth and immediatly spat it out. It was the worst thing I ever ate. The taste of horseradish alone is bad enough but with chedder cheese. YUK It took 30 minutes for the taste to go away.

Hand cheese  yuck

My host mom in Germany knew how much I loved cheese, so she decided to make hand cheese. I can only describe it as looking like a hockey puck. This thing had the most faul oder! I am one of those people who judge food by the way they smell and look. I took a bite and it tasted like it smelled. I secretly think my host mom knew I wouldn't like it, but she just wanted to see my reaction after trying it.  Wink

BALUT

This is a 16-17 day old duck embryo still in the whole egg. You chip off an end of the shell, drink out the "soup" first, then eat the embryo!! GROSS!!

In Manila a balut is considered by many as a delicacy. But as for me...

"I can't believe I ate the whole thing!!!!!"

Never again!!  no

I went to a Thai restaurant, and there was some stuff called fish sauce. (had a Thai name, but don't remember). Anyway, it looked like it would be good on spring rolls, sort of a tangy spicey sauce to dip them in. Well, I did, and I took my first bite. It smelled like rancid, moldy vagina. (not that I know what that tastes like, but that's about the worst analogy that I can think of). Anyway, the worst was that I spilled some on my clothes. I had to wash them 3 times to get the INTENSE fish smell out of them. Never again will I eat that.

Other than that, I'm open to ANYTHING and EVERYTHING, assuming that it is clean, fresh, or well cooked.

I can't understand those who don't want to try all different sorts of food. Food is AMAZING!, and the rainbow of flavors is awesome. Though, I will tell you that I really don't like Southern American food that much. Not that it isn't good, because damn, it's REAAALLLY good, but it is sooo greasy. You can just feel the grease coming out of your pores for the next 5 days.

But I get so pissed when people won't go with me to get some real ethnic food. My weakness is Thai food and Indian cuisine. Absolutely amazing and spicey flavors. My family refuses to even taste it. I hate it when people won't even TASTE something. They could be missing out on a new world of food.

Surströmming, there really isn't anything redeeming about it IMHO.

It's a Swedish fermented herring. Extremely smelly, you can really feel the pressure in the can, the smell makes you nauseous. Very salty too.

The closest equivalent I can think of, is getting a concentrate of fart smell in a little tin, the farts of many many people. Simply horrible - really, it is a very strong smell.

Further to that, the smell has cigarette smoke like characteristics - the smell sticks to you. Yuck, yuck,

Dude if you like Thai food you like fish sauce as there is NO Thai dish that doesn't have fish sauce in it (apart from deserts) as the Thais use fish sauce instead of salt.

I reckon you must have had some rank fish sauce as fish sauce is really nice (and I don't really like fish!). Like I said, it's used instead of salt just like the Chinese use soy sauce.

Vegemite and marmite are different - Vegemite is thicker, Marmite is quite runny. They're both an acquired taste, like guinness. They used to sell marmite flavoured snacks called twiglets - I had a love/hate relationship with those. They seemed to taste great when you were drunk and rank when sober

Fish sauce (nam pla) is indeed a foul smelling thing.

I absolutely love Thai food and have learned how to cook it. You add small amounts of fish sauce during the cooking process during which it loses its pungency and combines with other ingredients. But to eat it plain is really quite nasty.
