Got My CO F/A Interview, Need Advice

Okay, well, my dream of living at 35,000 ft. is in the beginning stage of becoming a reality. Talked with inflight recuiting with Continental today, actually several times, and they are flying me to IAH for an initial interview mid October.

I have previous work experience in Governmental Relations, Public Relations, and Customer Service, along with several internships done throughout college. I hold my degree in Liberal Studies with a focus on Business Administrative Leadership/PR. I also speak fairly fluent French and fundamental Mandarin Chinese.

The position is with Continental Mainline operations based at EWR.

My questions are:

1. What to expect at the interview
2. How to better prepare myself for the interview
3. If I acquire set position, I will need to move to the NYC area. How do F/A's go about getting a place with other F/A's?
4. How does seniority work, and how do I go about getting routes that I'd like? (International routes in particular).
5. Finally, I fear that I will be making less money with CO than I do at my current job, but it's been my dream to work in the airline industry, and it could possibly open doors as far as my career goes. So do I take the conservative approach and keep my current job, or do I take a risk to get out of Oklahoma and fly for a good part of my life?

Expect much competition, especially from former FA's of other airlines. Don't be intimidated by this.
2. How to better prepare myself for the interview-
Be professional and don't showboat! Come across as likable and emphasise the teamwork philosophy

You must answer yes to this question. Willingness to relocate is imperative. You will be disqualified if you answer no. Garaunteed!
4. How does seniority work, and how do I go about getting routes that I'd like? (International routes in particular).- Worry about that when you gt the job, concentrate on your image. Not trying to sound mean, but look ahead of what's directly in front of you, not what in the future. But to answer the question briefly, seniority is everything.
5. Finally, I fear that I will be making less money with CO than I do at my current job, but it's been my dream to work in the airline industry, and it could possibly open doors as far as my career goes. Most likely, you're coming into the industry during a downturn. CO FA's have yet to accept pay concessions yet. But if you're more concerned about fullfilling a dream over money, than you should be willing to accept the paycut. Just plan on being somewhat poor for a few years.

Well, first off what Jetjack said... Second EXPECT the UNEXPECTED. I have a friend who is a newer CO FA as well and it was NOTHING Like he expected. Feel free to email me, I could give you some pointers.

One thing you need to realize is OKC and TUL are not big bases for anything. If you wanna fly, you're gonna have to move. Also, anything you do is a risk. You can't REALLY get anywhere in life without some risk.

WOW!!! Holy shit, dude...that's pretty impressive for a guy your age. Should serve you well, good luck to you in the interview, hope everything works out the way you want.

Oh...don't tell them your A-net username.... Wink Might want to change that if you get the job...

Plus the service philosophy.

Typical questions:

"Why do you want to work for CO?"
Do not just say "because there's a position vacant at CO". What is special at CO, why do you like the company and why do you think you are the right person?

"Why do you want to pick this profession?"
Service, teamwork ...

"What's your strength?"
Must have something to do with your profession.

"Where are you at your weakest?"
Mention something that at least appears to be honest but is unrelated.

"What annual income do you expect?"
Get yourself informed!

"Where do you want to be in five years (career-wise)?"
"In the due time, I would surely talk about that with the human resources department, but I think a position as **** is realistic."
Do not make the impression that you are already thinking about your next step in your career, but at the same time tell them that you want to make a career.

"Are you nervous?"
Yes, you can be a little nervous at the beginning of the interview. This is an important moment for you, so it's only natural to be nervous.

"Did you have any problems getting here?"
The answer is "No." Passing mention: you get yourself informed well in advance.

A fortunately unusual situation to test how you can cope with stress goes like this:
"Great, you are one hour late! Do you want to try to fudge an excuse?"
Stay cool and polite and say something like "Look, I made a note and I'm certainly not late."
Sometimes an interviewer can get mean only to see if you can manage to stay calm and polite.

That's so funny because when I was in college CO was hiring ticket agents and I went to a cattle call at DFW. They asked me to stand in front of the (huge) group and answer some questions.

The first thing she asked me was: "Why do you want to work for Continental Airlines?" I was so nervous that I totally froze up. I couldn't think of anything so I just said: "Because I saw your want ad in the paper." There was this awkward moment of silence as that god-awful answer hit the floor. She then politely thanked me and I sat back down. It was so humiliating.  cry  Of course, I got a rejection letter a few weeks later.

But back to your question, you should try to connect with the interviewer. Everyone else there will be very nervous too, so you can use that to your advantage. If they break you into smaller groups (like they did at AA) try to position yourself as the leader. If they ask a question, be the first to speak up. And when the others are answering look at them; listen to what they say; and smile and act interested. That's what I did and I got hired at AA.

Sometimes I think its just luck too. You have to get an interviewer you can connect with. Anyway, good luck. Post whatever happens here.

PS: Jetjack74's right, do not flinch or even hesitate when they ask if you'd be willing to relocate (and they will ask). I know for sure that will kill your chances. Just say something cheesy like: "I'd love the opportunity to get to know a new city."
