Unbelievable. Yet more money appropriated by Ted Stevens, borrowed from the Chinese/Japanese - all in the name of trying to get more people to eat fish.

Is there anything Republicans won't throw my tax dollars at to buy a few more votes? Alaskan Airlines got the money to pay for that beautiful paint job from the Alaska Fisheries Marketing Board, whose chaiiman Ben Stevens is Sen. Steven's son.

The plane makes its first appearance in the color scheme and was due to arrive Sunday morning at -where else?- Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport.

Correct me if I'm wrong.. but isn't tourism related to hunting and fishing in Alaska a large income for the state?

Wouldn't it then be in the states interest to promote that industry?

Yes, $500k is a lot of money... but what portion of a TV add campaign is that? Surely a fraction of a single super bowl type commercial. How many people will see that plane? If if does fly LAX, ORD, DFW, PHX etc stops... a great many people will see it.

It was federal money, not state money. If Ted wants to promote Alaska salmon let him tax his fellow Alaskans. Not the rest of us - especially when we have such a horrific deficit.

If you have a problem with this kind of spending, call or write your senator and express your concerns.

I wonder if you realize that Alaska is pretty much one giant federal subsidy.

The federal government gave Alaska money to promote Alaskan interests. They never told Alaska to not make a flying bilboard.

I hope your state doesn't have a highway system if you are serious about complaining about federal money being transfered into state projects.

Thank you all very much . . . the plane looks very nice.

At least in Non-Av you all know frmo where the $$$ came and to whom it benefits. In Civ-Av dumb bastards are blaming AS . . . Ha Ha Ha.

Once again. Thanks for the $$$. The Alaska Seafood Marketing Council thanks you. The Alaska Salmon Fisherpersons thank you.

Oh but we do. Even our Alaska State Ferries are considered highways . . . and recieve Federal Highway $$$. Thanks again. (Don't blame Ted this time, he didn't do that, Wally Hickel did, way the hell back in the 1960s).

Lastly, let anyone of you that think this NON-EVENT is a big fuckin' deal show me where there's no pork in your state and I'll buy you a Pork Chop dinner.  sarcastic

Half a million $$$. WTF, we blow more than that in a day just watering the lawn on federal properties all over the world. Get over it.

Keep in mind, Salmon 3 Salmon is going to be around for a long time. 5 years is what I heard. So its actually only $100,000 a year ($275 a day) for advertising that will be viewed all across the western US. That’s pretty cheap advertising for the large magnitude of people who will eventually see it.

I love big government conservatives. We got cash for lawns, we got cash for flyin' billboards, we got cash for...well you name it and we can borrow the money for it. The Chinese got plenty (we gave it to 'em), and they looooove to loan it back to us.

As long as it benefits the donors, let the cash flow.

Just make sure that damn Hillary Klintoon don't try re-floatin' that crazy idea about that socialistic universal health-care - y'know providing basic medical care for our citizens. That's not whut gubmint's for. It's fer paintin' airplanes in fancy colors.

No its not, but that's not the point. Everyone is making a big stink about this plane and what a horrific waste of money it is, when in actuality it's but a tiny drop in the bucket of the pork that flows out of Washington. Should we be spending $500K on a plane to advertise Alaska salmon? I could probably think of better uses, but I'm not going to really spend any time thinking about it when a quick perusal of the last federal spending bills show other grants that two, three, four times as big for a lot less in visible results.

Unless you're going to get equally upset about all of the other boondoggles our elected idiots keep funding, moaning about the AS paint scheme is pointless.

Works with both parties, man. The king of Salmon...err, pork, in the history of Congress is Robert Byrd, who has brought in more pork to West Virginia than any Senator to any other state in the last 30 years. He's a pork machine. He's outlawed by the Muslim community, he gets so much pork. (only kidding!)

Wink ANC, as big a fan as I am, I -don't- pay attention to every thread that you contribute to.

Having said that, that's a great f-ing list.

A couple items I would add:

100. Eliminate K-street. The actions of "lobbyists", and the revolving door between government and these pond-scum to be outlawed.

101. Publicly-funded elections. Candidate viability established by signature count. Top 5 candidates receive a portion of a fixed amount of cash to advertise. Zero private donations allowed. Campaign cycle lasts a maximum of 6 months.

102. No fed. tax dollars used to paint airplanes.

Just think, for $500k the American taxpayer could support the entire life of a ghetto-dweller on the American welfare system.... with not much to spare.

Personally, I think I'd rather have my tax dollars spent on a 737. At least the 737 won't procreate.

Hey Nutsy, before I respond, I'm just letting you know that the mods have "banned" me from quoting you. The button doesn't work. So I have to highlight your text and quote it under someone's name and then change it.

 Sad  Sad  Sad

Now back to the topic, why would you call JCS a horrible person for saying what he did?

I agree with him -- I'd rather have my tax dollars going into a 737 than into a family that leeches off society.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not talking about a single mother with a job, and who's trying to earn an honest living -- she should have all the help she deserves and I am certainly happy to help.

What I, and JCS, are talking about, are the leeches who wait for their monthly check to go by cigarettes and alcohol. The leeches who keep producing kids when they don't need to be. The leeches who never try to earn a worker's living. The leeches who have no personal responsibility.

There is an enormous difference between the two, Nutsy.

No, JCS said "ghetto-dweller", which could mean anything. He stereotyped thousands of people and said he'd rather see his money spent on painting a plane then on seeing them get help. It's so eugenic it makes my stomach turn.

Better not hear a peep from you, JCS17, ANCFlyer, and Kjet12 about any religious beliefs. The Bible is very specific about this part.

Anyway, I'm sorry you feel the way you do. To pick painting a plane over the chance of saving a life is beyond comprehension to me. I hope you never find yourself in the opposite position, or if you do there is someone like me on the other end to pull you back.

I don't recall having said, or made inferrence to any religion . . . . I simply concured with the assessment that the time for life time handouts and gift giving at the expense of my Tax Burden is bullshit. I don't particularly give a hoot in hell what religion you have (or don't have). If you're gawddamn career welfare slug, it's time to put up or shut up. If you keep popping out kids (or assisting therein by pollinating the flower), it's time to see the doctor and get it sewn shut or cut off! Then it's time to get a J O B.

A few posters, yourself included, noted that the use of $500,000 in public money to paint an airplane is merely a drop in the bucket.

It would be interesting to compare the sum total paid to "welfare cheats" - I bet it pales in comparison to the staggering amount of public money "leeched" by corporations receiving handouts. A recent example: United Airlines years of mismanagement resulted in the company defaulting on its pension obligation - $9.8 Billion. Who picks up 50% of that? Why, that would be you and me.

That's one example. The other failed airlines are lining up to follow suit.

Another: Walmart is the biggest and richest corporation in the world. Yet we fund them to the tune of $1.5 Billion every year they leech off Medicaid, rather than provide health care for their employees.
