Congrats to Angela Merkel on heading a new grand coalition in Germany to be announced today. How do Germans feel about the SPD and CDU going to bed together? Will it work?

I would have preferred Jamaica. Reason: Civil rights, a grand coalition won't respect them, a Jamaica coalition would, because both the Greens and the Liberals would pressure the conservatives with that.

Not for four years. I think both sides will wait for an opportunity to blame the other side for a failure and call for new elections then.

A grand coalition (anywhere) can be a dangerous thing. Too much power, too much arrogance. Interesting times ahead in Berlin!

Funny how long it took the SPD to get out of the "Chancellor disaster" without face loss...finally they gave up, and some people STILL lost face!

Quoting Thorben (Reply 1):

That would be the stupidest thing to do...given the fact, that German voters did what they did and that they wouldn't vote differently even now, the one party that lets the GC go bust, will be history in the then following elections.

and btw: It's still a LOOOOOONG way until GC can get into place...there are still coalition negotiations ahead..and they are miles apart in some very important issues.

This is my only problem I have with the coalition as well. I think it will work, and it will work for 4 years. We need a new federal system, a new public social security system and a better consolidated budget policy. The good thing with a big coaltion is that neither SPD nor the CDU want to continue that after the next elections, therefore they can take unpopular, radical approaches.

But don't be too afraid with civil right issues. The Constitutional court will act if it is getting out of hand.

They are already pretty busy, there. There are complaints against:

Lifting the bank-secret
Shooting down aircraft (Luftsicherheitsgesetz)
IMSI-Catcher (device to tap all mobile communication in a certain area)
Telekommunikationsgesetz

Also, there are going to be more complaints:

Lauschangriff (even the newest version of the law seems to be unconstitutional)
Biometric ID cards
Data retention (if it happens)

But this isn't a way of politics, if you have to run to the courts the whole time.

In this elephant marriage, people like Schily, Zypries, Beckstein, Stoiber etc. will run amok, concerning civil rights.

Wait until the next elections.. you can blame the CDU aka Mrs. Merkel for everything that won't work, even if it is the SPDs fault.. be prepared for a strong FDP and Greens.. and.. if I was in the CDU, I would have preferred not to nominate the chancellor but receive key ressorts like finance and interior, inter alia.. now, the SPD has the big card

Well, for me it was the last time I voted for the SPD (OK, I only gave them the first vote, and in my district of the conservative north-west of FRA, the CDU has the absolute majority with the 1st vote).. but it was the last time I voted tactically for them.. I did not check that circle so they elect Mrs. Haesslich as chancellor.. good bye Germany, but it will probably only be two years, till GWB starts to search for WMDs somewhere, Merkel sucks his cock, and some sincere people use their hammers to stop this Schabernack

Sad the liberals did not take part in the democarcy game and discussed an Ample

I thought the same but according to WDR 2 will Schäuble become the Foreign Minister, seems that it was a mistake of them.

The name Struck went around this morning, but obviously Schily is now favorite for foreign...which seems a bit strange given his age and the fact that he wanted to end his career years ago.

I'm waiting for proposals who shall lead the Ministry of Finance...obviously Eichel is "burnt".

Unfortunately Ulla Schmidt seems to be able to cling to her seat...that is a joke and a bad one at that!! The most ridiculous fact is that Horst Seehofer who is an expert on health will probably be Minister of Environmental Issues!!

It is a real joke! Seehofer is the most competent Minister for Public Health, and it is a shame the SPD did not yield the way for him. I heard that Seehofer will be for agriculture, and the environmental ministry will go to the SPD

I think Sabena332 would have preferred Angela Merkel becoming the new CEO of LH (his beloved airline).
Seriously, congratulations to Germany that they got rid of this Schröder!

BTW Schäuble is candidate for Minister of interior.
