Hey guys.. I was cruisin around on Google Earth and found this interesting little circle of aircraft in downtown Baghdad. I see one rotarcraft (helicopter) and the rest are fixed-wing a/c. Some of those with swept back wings look like MiG's maybe?

Anyone care to ID these aircraft and maybe speculate as to why they're located like they are?

Just for a point of reference, they're located at the following lat/long:

33"20'01 N, 44"21'19 E

Thanks!

Steve

The swept back wings might be Mig-21s

White, straight-wing on the lower left looks like a Su-25...white delta is probably MiG-21...just above a Su-17 (maybe?) and MiG-17s (?)

Weapons of mass destruction!!!!!!!!

Yes, the airfield is actually just there to camouflage the chemical weapons factory underneath.

Now if Google earth could only add the option of an earth penetrating radar picture, we could present the UN with proof.

They're parked next to the old Muthena air base which used to be located there.

In this image you can still see remnants of the old runway which cuts diagonally across the frame:

It was an active airfield during the 1991 Gulf War but was deactivated afterwards. It's number 10 on the target list on this period diagram from the first Gulf War:

Starting at top left
2 x AN-2
1 x mig 17
2 x mig 19
su-22 fitter or possibly a MIG-23/ 27
1 Mig-21
Helicopters prolly MI-8 as most popular

the straight wing is probably a AN 72

I have no idea what the one between the helicopters and the one that i call a AN 72

Edit to change order to match what i meant

At first glance, it appears to be a crop circle about to spawn a tin foil hat.

Aha!! We've found where the Mothership docks!

Looks to be some sort of open-air museum display.

Especially when you consider the aircraft at the 11-o'clock to 12-o'clock appear to be old WWII fighter/trainer types...the one that looks like a Harvard (Texan for you Americans) is probably a Yak-52 (or it could very well be a Harvard/Texan for all we know - Iraq was controlled by the British for some time).

I think that plane might be a Hawker Hunter. Also, I think the plane you call AN-72 is actually to small to be that. I think it is probably an An-24 (or derivative).

I am thinking that one might be that small Yak with the H-Tail.

I can't remember what the actual designation was.

One of those looks like a MiG-17 to me. Plus a couple MiG-21's and a MiL-24?

Well lets start with my guess starting at the 8 o'clock aircraft and working counter clockwise.

That Yak. (IT could be a SU-25, if for the color)
Hunter
MI-4 (The -8 has more then 4 blades)
An-2
MIg-21
Fitter
MIg-19
MIG-17
Mig-15
The last two are single engine props. I think one might be a Spit. Don't know what the other might be...CJ-6?

The plane at 7 o'clock is indeed a Hawker Hunter.

Which one is the Northwest DC-9?

I thought the big straightwing at 5:30 toward the inside of the circle is an AN-2. Fifty eight foot wingspan and you are looking at a highwing for sure. Colt or an Otter.

Over at 8:00 looks like a pusher twin. Piaggio?

Ok i can see the unknown as a hunter....And the Mil- 4 but i still see the But i stll think the top two are an-2's They are / were real popular in the MID east as they could pretty much go anywhere. ..and i do not think one is a MIG-15....but Mig-17's....THe straight wing that I called a AN-72 does kind of remind me of a SU-25...Looking agin it is probably to small to be a cargo plane.
