Is The Pro-Atlantis Evidence Real?

I have read several books about how there is a lot of evidence that there was long ago much contact between the Old and New Worlds, and that somewhere between them, the Lost Continent of Atlantis really did exist. If the books speak the truth, then it is hard not to believe that this is at least partly true. But I would like to know if the books are giving true facts or not. Here are some of the things they say (some are not directly related to Atlantis, just other points of interest)

-there are words in languages of officially unrelated languages with striking similarity, eg. "dad" (tata, tad, ata, etc), "papilio" (Latin for Butterfly, something like "papilotl" in an Amerindian language)

-there were elephants illustrated in Maya or other Indian images and carvings. These could have been "borrowed" from Egypt, but in 1928, a skeleton of a mastodon was discovered on an archeological site's stove somewhere in Latin America

-there is evidence that long ago, amazing technology which would seem to relate only to the 20th century had been pre-invented. For example, there are stories in old Indian literature about airplanes, as well as about rockets powered by mercury (another claim being that rockets have been fired at Alexander the Great's army in India). Not only this, but the book claims that there was a weapon clearly described in several ancient Indian texts that sounds pretty much exactly like modern nuclear bombs. Further evidence cited is an excavation where skeletons were found lying in a town, with high levels of radiation, as well as other evidence of nuclear warfare in that area.

-the cro-magnon race of humankind is claimed to have been related to for example the modern Basques. Also, a tomb in Latin America contained a cro-magnon person's remains. Therefore this race is identified with Atlanteans who escaped the destruction of their island and whose culture afterwards might have regressed.

-the Canaries are alleged to have once had an indigenous population that showed various signs of being Atlantean. They didn't have boats, for fear of being swallowed up in the sea like their ancestors.

Is much of this nonsense, misinterpretation or fabrication, or is there really much truth to this?

Very interesting. There are more such strange coincidences. For instance: the mummies in Eqypt where made with ingredients only found in South America.

Also, very very detailed maps existed of the south pole even before it had been "discovered" by Europeans. Maps even of what is now covered under 100s of metres of snow and ice and that has only been mapped since sattelites where available. How these ancients maps where made noone knows.

Heck, perhaps the south pole IS Atlantis, just a few more years of global warming and we will know. Big grin

Of course there is evidence of Atlantis. This proves it!!!

But seriously, no offense Duke, but the books you read sound like claptrap. Sort of like chariots of the Gods.

My major in college was geology and while I work in the IT field a lot of it has been working with geologists, I know a lot about geology for a layperson.

Ain't no way an entire continent can sink in a gigantic cataclysmic disaster.

Continents drift on plates - there are a lot of reasons but basically because the lighter granitic rock lies upon the heavier basaltic rock. The lighter rock settles. Where plates collide and merge, continents can sometimes subduct, but because the granite is lighter, you have strange complicated rock examples, the West coast of South America is one area.
This intro to Plate Tectonics should help explain better than I can and once understood will make you realize how silly Atlantis sounds.

I suspect that there are a lot of linguistic similarities between supposedly unrelated languages. I'm told that almost all words for mother have an m sound in there. Don't know why. Maybe it is innate. That is no proof of Atlantis or anything else really.

Cro-magnon race of humans are homo sapiens sapiens, I think all modern humans are homo sapiens sapiens and thus are cro magnon. Not sure what you're getting at there.

Atlantis began with a story told by Plato, every scholar of Ancient Greek and Plato believes that he meant it as an allegory and sort of a historical novel. It is interesting that in Pre Classical times the island of Santorini blew up, killing the locals there and probably causing locally cataclysmic tsunamis that hastened the decline of the pre-Greek Minoan civilization. THe Minoans fascinated the ancient Greeks and it is obvious that Plato basically wrote an ancient equivalent of a piece of historical fiction. SO a real event, minor but not of course to the people killed, caused Plato to write a story replete with allegory about angry Gods and justice, since he changed facts here and there, people began to think this story must be fact, and have been looking for a chimera ever since.

Sorry if I'm harsh, but I read about hucksters all the time peddling bad books.

Hope I wasn't being unduly harsh.

I may be ugly. I may be an American. But don't call me an ugly American.
