I recently bought a [pussy]cat scratch/relaxing post for my cats. It comes with two little semi-private cubby holes for snoozing, plus a soft sheep-wool top shelf. Heck I wouldn't mind if they made something like this for us humans.
Here are my cats, one of them is in each cubby hole. Turbo is in the top hole and Bean is in the lower one.
Now they have sort of switched positions. Bean is on the top shelf and Turbo is below Bean-but still in the top hole.
and another shot from a different angle.
So now how do they work this out? Who decides who gets the top shelf and who gets which cubbyhole? Will they develop favorites, work out a timeshare program, or will they just duke it out each time one of them wants to be in a certain position?

I had no idea so many people would be interested in viewing and discussing yet another thread about my cats and their little cubby hole snoozing tower.

Matt's continued pic whoring of his cats.
I'm sure that Bean and Turbo don't mind if they aren't totally clueless.
I guess I do it because 1) some people do enjoy animal threads (I wasn't a big fan of Pluchette when she first appeared, but she kinda started to grow on me after awhile). 2) As caustic and abrasive as some of you think I am, I have to show some kind of soft and sensitive side lest I get written off as a big oaf altogether. 3) Animals are a subject of much more civil discussion. Even I get tired of engaging in the same pointless take-no-prisoners debates over Bush, gay vs straight, and Iraq over and over and over.
For those threads, I ought to just type up template replies. And when I want to participate, just copy-n-paste, and be done with it. I pretty much argue the same points time and time again as do most people.....
Speaking of animals, there is a difference between cats, dogs, and parrots versus cows, chickens, and pigs. The first group are animals. The second group is food.

Matt, if non-av hasn't fully equipped you to determine who is a 'top' and who is a 'bottom', then there's not much hope for you.
In cats, as in life, the dominant one will usually end up on top. Unless, of course, they are a dominant bottom. I think there's enough expert opinion around here to advise you!!
Cheers

Matt, remind me again which of the two was born as the tom? With the cats I've encountered they tend to give deference to males OR by "age" in the house. Case in point, my mother has 3 cats. One is a female applehead Siamese we purchased approximately 8 years ago, one a female stray who showed up on her doorstep about 5 years ago, and the third a male stray who showed up on her doorstep as a kitten about 3 years ago. Basically the pecking order is Misty (the siamese), India (the male stray), and Baby (the female stray). Why did India jump over Baby in terms of the hierarchy? Best I can figure is because Misty "adopted" him as her kitten - taught him how to hunt, carried him around like he was her kitten, everything like that. Despite that, her dog is firmly at the BOTTOM of the pecking order. And because you were so kind as to share your "kitty porn," here are hers. Pardon if they're poor pics, but I used my cell phone camera last time I visited to snap the pictures.
- Misty
- India
- Baby

Matt,
It looks like Turbo and Bean are co-dominant or mutually non-dominant based on how they behave. Usually if there's a dominant cat that cat will always be the highest cat in a vertical environment. You've raised two cats that share. Congratulations!
My cats are the same way. There's never fighting between them over living space. While Ernie *tends* to be dominant - simply because he's physically larger and stronger - Bert also goes up on top of my bookshelves and dressers. The only place that Ernie shows true dominance is at the food bowl. Bert can come in and share, but Ernie won't move to allow him in if the bowl is blocked.
