I bought one, and the thing was a piece of crap. I had a 1994 Sentra and the car was not all that great. I had the car for about two years, and had to replace the starter after I had the car a little more than a year. I ending up selling it to the mechanic I took it to when the gaskets on the engine went bad, as it was going to cost me more to have it fixed than what the car was worth.

I've got a Primera (made in the UK). I agree its not the most exciting car but it was cheap to buy, its reliable and fairly economical. I drive 50 miles a day to and from work and all I want to do is get there and back with no hassle. The only time in over 3 years it let me down was with a flat battery.
Now I could go and buy a nice shiney BMW (not so reliable) but I always ask myself why do I want to spend 20 grand and leave it in a car park all day? The money's better spent on other things.
Not my experience, 3 BMWs in 9 years and not even a hiccup... unlike my dad's Skyline which was a lemon almost from day one. When he bought it after driving Ford for as long as I can remember my reaction was "wtf did you buy this for?" He defended his decision but as soon as he could flog it it was gone and he was back to Ford.
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

Well that's a bad example. BMW always rates higher then automotive average relailbility studies, rating much higher then MB, Audi, and VW. Our family has not had any problems with our 3 BMWs, how many have you owned?

I've always thought Nissan make great engines and then put them in crap bodies. Even back to the Datsun days when a friend of mine had a Datsun 120Y she used for her driving school and put 300,000 miles on the engine.
It eventually fell apart due to corrosion.
Another friend is having trouble at the moment with his Almera Tino drinking oil, but it's never let him down and they think it's something simple which is causing it. It is just the finish on Nissan which lets them down, cheap plasticky interiors and even ABS plastic wings on that Tino!
The old dear's got an X-Trail which she loves, and needs as she does some caravanning. Again great mechanics but crappy bodywork and finish. If they could just get away from the cheap interiors and lack of a quality feel then yes I'd have one.

I test drove a new Micra about a year ago and thought it was like driving a tin can. It seemed to rattle and is not very safe. I know someone who had one and had a crash, and the body just crumbled. I should be all for people buying Nissan as it keeps a lot of local people in jobs (especially members of my family who work at the plant)

I'm sure I heard on the radio this morning that Toyota will overtake GM in the next year to become the worlds biggest car maker. They must have a brilliant work ethos and controls to maintain quality standards and keep up the volumes.
On what basis? Is it a styling issue? Or quality?
Because from what I understand...Renault and Nissan are very closely linked, sharing many items from the parts bins.
What exactly do the companies share?
I noticed while in Europe a few months ago..the Renault minivan is exactly (on the outside) as the Nissan minivan sold in North America.

That Maxima I had...with the 3.0 liter 6 had the belt...needed changing way too often...think it had to do with the low-grade synthetics it is made out of.

I have been driving the infiniti G20s (1993 and 2000) since 1996.
The only problem that I had was that the fuel injecter in my 93 g20 had to be replaced twice. I am think about getting a BMW (used 525i or a new 325i) now. Nissans are not a bad car. I like the old name better though "DATSUN".

Was that the straight 6 engine? If so it is a derivative of the skyline motor and so will have a belt.
Dunno if Skylines are sold in the states, all UK and NZ ones are "Grey Imports" that is, imported second-hand and not by the dealer network. they can be tweaked up to 1,000 horsepower..... if you like your life short and action packed!!

The starter? Holy s*** that's bad. I've had a Jeep Cherokee for over 10 years (90,000 miles) and, despite all the problems (bad door locks and crappy cooling system), the starter NEVER failed, even when it was -15 deg. F. We can definitely learn from you: if your car has an unreliable starter, it's definitely going to give you a lot of grief and misery later on.
