AIRLINERS.NET CREW FOUNDER
Hi all,
I am happy to announce some great updates to the aircraft quiz section! I have tried to work on some of the shortcomings discussed in the previous thread and can present the following new features:
You may now choose between doing a "trial run" or a real competition. If you choose to compete you will have to have cookies and Javascript enabled in our browser (to make it more difficult to cheat).
The competition mode is on a time limit. You get a maximum of 10 seconds to consider each photo (if you do a photo faster than 10 sec, the time left will be added to the next photo and so on). It also contains a nifty countdown application to make the situation extra stressful Â
If you are really good you will get on the high score list! There's a separate high score list for each category and for each selection of number of photos (so the high score list for category cockpit with 20 photos is not the same as the one with 50 photos).
The bottom of the quiz index page will show the most recently updated high score list and in the future it will show many more high score lists.
The quiz competition feature is currently for First Class members only. As First Class Members surf Airliners.net without ads, the pages will load faster and it will be less unfair as lots of time can be lost when the ads are loading. Also, this is in accordance with my concept for the First Class Membership: Basic features in all sections are free for all but you need a membership for the extra value features. You can all upgrade to First Class for as little as $5 (for one month of membership) and when you stop paying, your membership is automatically restored to your current one (like Premium, Photographer etc). Try it out!
PS. I used my own username when testing the system (just clicking randomly) so you'll notice that I'm topping a lot of lists with really poor results. Â

I love it!
Except for one thing: In the Airliners quiz, why do you throw in biz jets/GA aircraft? It gets frustrating, because I only pay attention to airliners (and thus know them quite well), not biz jets or GA aircraft (which tend to look so similar to each other, confusing me).

Thanks guys, glad you like it!
When you run into photos that are incorrectly marked or in the wrong category, please use the "correct info" link. There is no human selection involved for the quiz, the program simply chooses photos at random from the categories on the site.

Then those photos do not contain the "BUSINESS" category. Please report this to our editors via the "Correct info" link and we will fix that error in our database.
Thanks,
Johan

Is it possible that when you change the quiz category that it shows you the high scores for that category before you take the quiz?

I am going to have to find a faster internet connection to do this quiz, as it take about 5 seconds to download each picture.
The timer thing really puts the pressure on. In practice I was getting more right than wrong but when its timed I am getting lots more wrong.

Yes, I don't see how some of the top times have been posted.
I'm on a 512kb ADSL line and I sit there waiting for the pic to display watching the timer tick. It should be possible to stop the timer when we click on the a/c type, and only start it again once the pic download has completed.

Love the aircraft quiz and think it is a fabulous addition, but was wondering. Is there any plan to maybe start a new category of "Airport Overviews"? There are a lot of these in the database and, in my opinion, would make a great new quiz category. I realize the format of the quiz is based on aircraft manufacturer and model and would thus present a formatting challenge, but I know several people who love to guess what airport it is from photos.

Great idea this quiz. I love it. Thanks.
But since I am sitting in Indonesia there is no way I can participate.
After I made my first click the time started running and it ran out before half of the picture was even loaded. Welcome to the Indonesian internet connections!
