I just booked a flight on Thai Airways International from Osaka to Bangkok and they list the aircraft as AB6. Is that an A300-600 or A340-600? They fly both.

A300-600 is the correct answer. The A340-600 would be mentioned A346.

Do you know why they list it that way? Are they trying to be vague so you don't know that you are flying on an A300-600 or is that Airbus lingo?

It's to distinguish it from the AB3, which denotes A300-B2 and A300-B4. The "B" in the name is a good hint as to the "AB", since the A300-600 is technically A300B4-600(R).

For the IATA code, it is shortened to 346.

A340-200 is 340
A340-300 is 343
A340-500 is 345

It's not vague when after you learn them, and use them every day...as easy to learn as any other acronyms you use in the everyday life of an aviation professional; part of the territory...

A340-200 is 340

I would think it was A342? Iberia uses the sign "A340" when they don't have a scheduled A340-300 or A340-600 on the route, it would depend on loads or what's availble.

As mentioned, the IATA code for the A340-200 is 340.

I agree, it must be 342.
Just like IB, LH doesn´t have (anymore) A342 but in timetables A340 is almost exclusively used, just like with IB, the aircraft are switched depending on demand.

It's all about data quantity. Most of the booking/scheduling systems were not developed so recently, so why waste data space. 3 digits are enough.
