I was wondering, it seems that on many newer Boeing aircraft, the illuminated No Smoking light no longer flashes on initial descent; only two chimes are heard. I know this is the case on DL's 764ERs, 772ERs, and DL's newest 752s (not sure about the 753s, and the 737NGs and 77Ls do not even have illuminated No Smoking signs).

I was wondering, when did Boeing make this change? Is there any particular reason why the No Smoking signs don't flash on these aircraft?

No smoking signs are a customer option on Boeing aircraft. The option was first available on the 777 and was optional on other airplanes starting around the mid-90s.

Delta also has the ability to make the switch in the flight deck only operate as a noise and keep the signs illuminated all the time. It's a software/hardware change that can be made.

This would be the FA call button I think which is on the overhead of boeing aircraft near the seatbelt sigh switches. So it makes the noise but does not change any of the lights just to let the FA's know about being lower than 10,000ft or 5mins to landing, above 10,000ft etc...

Funny. Do we really still need No Smoking signs in the Western world? How's does one have a smoke without an ashtray anyway? The only ashtray I've seen in 20 years is the one next to the lav.

That brings up another question: Why does the FAA still require an ashtray next to the lav door?

An ashtray on an aircraft is a safe place to extinguish a cigarette. When people get caught, and they still do try, that is where the FA will place the butt if the butt has not been flushed or placed into the trash.

So yes you still need a lit sign or placard saying not to smoke....that way when people do smoke they have broken a posted law.

Irrespective of western world or Eastern World....There are rebels everywhere.
Nowadays the No Smoking sign is selected in the ON position Always.

Im still surprised why the ashtray is NOT removed in most Lavatories on board.

Which aircraft are you talking about? I looked at four MMEL's and it's on all of those: 737 (25-20), 747 (25-40-01), 777 (25-41-2), and 787 (25-41-01).

You will be surprised how many unruly pax there still are, smoking in the lav. (And thankfully usally prosecuted afterwards)
They tend to ditch it in the toilet, if there is no ashtray, which is far more dangerous, so its actually worth installing (and requiring) an ashtray in the lav.

The key word here is "in the Lavatories". The ashtray on the outside of the door can be MEL'd as y'all say but the one on the inside can not. I am just speaking of 737's.

Now if one wanted to be creative the Lavatory itself could be placed on MEL, but that is also up to the crew.

Even more creative would be to take the ashtray from the outside of the door and put it on the inside and MEL the exterior ashtray (3 days). If at a maintenance station (and they don't have one) a mechanic could swap them. If not and the crew puts it in the book they have now, at the least caused a delay, waiting for contract maint. or a cancellation if they don't want to MEL the Lav.. They would then have to wait for me to fly from DAL to take care of it.

Things like this happen and are a real pain, but on the positive side, I can usually get overtime out of I can't get a flight back that night.
