well I flew my last flight a few days ago so I'll probably be posting less since I won't be "current" or up to speed on all the new and cool info and gadgets. Hopefully no one cares that I posted this here since this was the forum I usually hung out at and most of the guys I've gotten to know are on this form. Fly safe y'all

Congratulations on a long career getting things to and from the world on time   I guess now it's time to look forward to being well rested on a consistent basis.

I think all any of us here on the forum hope for is that now we can start hearing more of your favorite stories from over the years, especially for those of us who only flew stuff in the 12,500 lb and under category.

Retired for good? And no flying of any kind?

I retired early and took over the family business. But that's squared away and doesn't need me full time, so I've floated the resume around (after updating the logbooks) and had an immediate offer (which I declined). But another offer is being negotiated...

In the meantime, I've done a bit of G.A. flying and I'm giving a lot of time to looking for the right deal on a sailplane.

So - no flying of any kind for you?

Finally, congratulations for completing a long and safe career.

Thanks guys I really appreciate your kind words. Actually I do think I'll do some GA flying, I mean after all most all of my life has been in the cockpit of something be it J-3 or MD-11. I do plan on getting good rest for a change. I can say it was a wonderful journey and those still on the journey should remember to have FUN! Don't make it unpleasant! CC

And, where you really that close to the age 60 cutoff when they changed the rule five years ago? Juuuust barely snuck in there if you just turned 65!

I second what Aaron747 said about occasionally posting a memorable story. You have surely seen a lot in as many hours in the cockpit over the years.

And from your background...definitely enjoy getting the opportunity to get a good night's sleep every night of the year and at the hours of your choosing!

I get to do the retirement gig on 1/3/13 however; have enjoyed a few weeks off prior to the date and will tell you, NOTHING like having your own schedule to do with whatever it is you desire that minute......SO

Congratulation CosmicCruiser on your retirement and a long happy well rested life ahead. Shame we didn't get a chance to knowingly speak to one another over the radio, but one day our paths may yet cross.

Yeah I was within 2 months! I'll be 65 in Feb. but here at Fedex if your birthday is close to the front of the year it's better to go out in Dec.

Quoting pilotpip (Reply 5):

You got that right! especially east bound over the Atlantic and just about coast out "here comes the sun"

Hey don't tempt me! Let's see 1A, off 2B on interconnect closed, is that right?

Quoting Aaron747 (Reply 8):
You can start by telling us about how your last week on the line went

Actually I bid a rather easy flight MEM-HNL-OAK-SEA-ANC-MEM and all went smooth. The first leg had the satcom deferred so we had no CPDLC after that nothing significant. My F/O was nice and considerate to allow me to fly every leg. ANC was very cold and going in that morning the wind was from the north at 18-25kts so we shot a visual to 33. The HUD makes that a piece of cake. Last landing in MEM I chose a no A/T, no A/P approach and landing. Again the HUD makes it easy.

Quoting Aaron747 (Reply 8):
Do they not do that for the heavy haul drivers??

Yes they do but for my last landing in MEM it was during the night inbounds so there really wasn't a good place to do it nor would my family see it. I've seen it done in daytime. However since I always bid STN for years, on my last weekend layover there the Fedex mechanics did arrange the "carwash" as we taxied out. That was very special. What a great group of guys there at STN. anyone know these guys tell them I said so! STN ramp and the Cambridge layovers will always be my most fond memories.

Congratulations CosmicCruiser! Been enjoying your posts for years, and hope you will continue to contribute.

I always like seeing the FedEx MD-10/11s approaching and departing LAX. They climb out of there like no other airplanes (though I've heard that's because they're just flying up to BUR or something...).

Hi CosmicCruiser, Again Happy Retirement. I just figured out where you retired from, and I wonder if you ever flew N558FE? She use to be N901WA a long time ago with Western. I am sure you flew on a few metal I use to work on, and if you flew N527FE I help accepted her from MDC in Long Beach as N812DE. I am sure you will enjoy your retirement, and looking fwd to seeing your post in the future.

Sounds like a great way to go out. Do a long leg out to HNL to watch the palm trees sway, handle the gusty stuff in ANC one last time, and bring her home. Thanks for sharing!

Based on my conversations with other people on the freight side of the biz, nobody ever misses layovers in ANC.

I managed to dig a couple pictures of N525FE out of the archives from when you guys used to fly into NGO (these are from back in 2007):

Quoting FlyMKG (Reply 25):

Yes I did as a 727 capt and it was always a hoot to fly. The extra power made you adjust the deck angle differently from the standard -200 attitudes. It was fun.

Quoting AmericanAirFan (Reply 26):

Absolutely part of me wants to keep going. I'll miss the int'l layovers and the company of some really fine pilots. I won't miss being constantly jet-lagged or trying to sleep knowing you've got only 4 more hours until alert call. I know some of you here can certainly relate to that!

I always remember years ago, when I was a B767 F/O, I had the honour of flying with a gentleman on his last flight. On this occasion it was FCO-YYZ. He was a great guy, and someone I held with a great deal of respect.

His last landing? Thumped it on something fierce!!!! I couldn't believe it when after the second bounce and firmly on the ground, he commanded "Go-around, Flaps" and firewalled the thrust levers! Off we went again, and after all the drill items were completed he turned to me and said "I'm going to try that one again!".

I almost pissed I was laughing so hard. His second landing? Superb!
