Hi Hawk21, Buzz here. Maybe i'm wrong, but i'm thinking that the Zap Flap is similar to the Split Flap. And the DC-3 / C-47 uses those.
I was suprised about 30 years ago when i had some wind tunnel time at San Jose State Univ. At high angles of attack, deploying the split flaps moved the leading edge stagnation point up to the leading edge - the airflow was splitting about 5% of the chord.... underneath the leading edge and causing a burble across the top of the airfoil.
And it also causes extra drag... there's an RCAF C-47 story about the flap selector valve being tightened down too much, hydraulic fluid was passing around the end of the valve and the flaps went down about 15%. The airplane was about 15 mph slower than normal (when you cruise at 140 mph you notice) and there was an airframe vibration. Finally somebody in the aft cabin noticed the flaps were down a little - and the handle was up.
g'day
