Looking at this picture of SFO, I noticed what looks like a temporary (and very narrow!) runway 29 to the right of 28R. I couldn't find anything on the airport diagram. What is this for? Is it still there?

Well sure nuff. I'll bet that hasn't appeared on the airport diagram in the past, either, but can't be sure. I sure don't remember ever hearing anybody cleared to take off from runway 29.
It's not on the Terraserver pic, which is dated Feb 2004.

It may have been a STOL runway... IAH use to have a taxiway east of 15R-33L designated as one for Twin Otters and other STOL aircraft. Since these aircraft have sort of fallen out of use, so have the runways...

If you look at the other end of that runway 29, there is a 747 about to take off from it.
Could be taxiying, but be cooler to think it was trying a take off.

I saw that too earlier this week.
I am told by some knowledgable people that 29 was a used by smaller jets while one of the 28's was getting re-paved or something. obviously no approches for that strip except the visual.

"Any idea how old the SFO photo on Google is?"
Comparing it with the Terraserver view of Millbrae, less than a mile south of SFO, I'm guessing the Google pic is older.

I looked up my house, which is not too far south of SFO, and the pic looks to be at least 2 or 3 years old. My house isn't even that color anymore.

Comparing it to the picture of ONT at the time, this is late 2002. The taxiway realignment is in it's early stages.
