I have always wondered what the red square outline with the circle in the middle of it is. Then I noticed that there is another one under the door. What are they. They are on the the 318/19/20/21 models. Every airline no matter what the color scheme is has the box in red. What is it and thanks in advance for all the help.

The static port is used to measure outside air pressure... it must be kept clean and perfectly flush to the fuselage surface. This red box is an extra visual marker to identify damage which maybe out of limits or too close to the static port...

The red box also alerts the aircraft maintenance personnel that the area within the red box is not to be aimed at directly with the pressure washer when cleaning the airplane, or scrubbed vigorously with a washing wand. Water in the static lines of an A320 can cause erroneous readings in the aircraft's air data computer, and cause the aircraft to think that it is higher or lower above the ground than it actually is, as well as false airspeed indications. I've heard that getting the water out of those static lines can be a real chore to maintenance personnel.

PlainSmart, while your comments are largely correct I feel that it is worth pointing out that the A320 and later Airbus aircraft do not have a Pitot/Static system like earlier aircraft. Captain's and F/O instruments are fed from the ADIRUs which get environmental data, digitally, from Air Data Modules. The ADMs are located within a foot of the sensor or port and convert the Static or Pitot pressure to a digital signal. This is then wired to the ADIRU. (no pipes, less weight)
Only the Standby Instruments, ASI and Altimeter are fed by a conventional pipe system.
I have worked on these Aircraft for the last 13 years and have never known a water related instrument problem.
