Now here's a really obscure techie question.

How "similar" are the Rolls Royce Conway RCo.12 Mk 508's that powered the 707-420 to the RCo.43 Mk 550's of the Super VC-10? In other words, if you listen to a VC-10 operating today, is that sound likely to be indicative of the sound produced by the Mk 508 variant that powered the 707-420?

I realize that the sounds may be nothing at all alike, since the Mk 508's produced something like 17,500 lbs of thrust while the Mk 550's of the VC-10 put out well over 20,000 lbs. Yet -- and here's my tenuous linking of the two -- they are both Conways.

How I would love to know!

(BTW, a complete listing of the RCo. variants can be seen here.)

Cheers,
Happy-flier

Quoting Happy-flier (Thread starter):

VERY different!

The Conways on the VC-10 produce a strange 'warbling' sound which is totally unique to that aircraft, due to the sound output of the front stages creating interference. The 707 and DC-8 installations did not produce this effect presumably because the engines are much further apart.

Similarly the Conways on the VC-10 did not have the hairdryer attachment at the rear which the underwing installation on the 707-420 had, so noise levels when stood at the rear of the aircraft were on a par with a turbojet powered 707.

However it is when running at idle or taxiing where the distinct difference shows up. There is no other aircraft which makes a sound like the VC-10 does.

Thanks WhiteHatter.

I WISH I could find a video/sound-recording of the VC-10 someplace. I have never heard one ever before - even though I saw a VC-10 at the Hamilton Air Show in 1996 and got to walk under it and photograph it from various angles.

There is an Avion Video DVD on the VC10 which I can heartily recommend. Here's a link to a review. It does include some material where the sound is well-captured.

I've got that DVD, very highly recommended.
Remember to crank the sound up, and if you have it, surround sound!

Irish251, GDB:

Thanks so much for mentioning that DVD. I've just been to take a look... and bought it... along with several others which caught my eye... 97 quid... cheers.  Sad
