I would like to know, what the fuel consumption of a DC-8 50 / 60 series is and how much less fuel the CFM-56 equipped 70 series uses.

Is an Il-76 better or worse in fuel consumption?

Thanks!

It's been a while since I flew the DC8s but I will share some information. A DC8-61 will generally burn 3000-3500 pounds per hour per engine during cruise flight. The -50 series will consume generally the same. The -70 will burn less generally between 2500-2800 pounds per hour per engine. While this places the CFM engines at a clear advantage, the most significant difference is in the climb to altitude. I recall the -71 used 1/3 less fuel from takeoff to top of climb as compared to the -63 and was able to takeoff with less fuel at a lighter weight and then climb to a higher and more efficient altitude initially. The total net result was a considerable savings in fuel cost for a given flight with a given payload (passengers or cargo)

Has anybody an idea what the fuel consumption of an CFM-engined DC8 is, when it has to keep one engine running on the ground (lack of APU & AirStart)?
