I have some questions regarding a project about the MD-11's landing gear. We have sorted the whole thing out, but got stuck at one part; the maintenance.

I'm interested in the type of maintenance done on the landing gear. The various checks (line, a, b, c-check etc) are familiar with me, but I have no information on what kind of maintenance is made during these several checks. What kind of maintenance does the gear get at an C-check, and at how much flights/years does the gears need a total overhaul for example? All the details interest me...

Can someone help me out?

Discounting brake and wheel changes the most common task performed is lubrication. Interval? No idea. I can try and find out next week. Never having worked check, I'd assume some dimension checks are done for wear and of course lubrication. So far as I know gear are hard-timed, but again, I have no idea what the interval is.

We also service the struts when required. If we see the strut low (low air) or we get a writeup of an overly bouncy aircraft (low fluid) during taxi, we service. Quite an interesting task on the dual chamber struts that some MD11 have. I've only heard it described, so I woun't even try to describe it myself.

On our fleet of 744, and 763's, landing gear lubrication is carried out every 'A' check or 600 hours. Apart from inspecting fuse pins for rotation, and wheel & brake changes, there isn't much else done to them. As they are a lifed part, they eventually get removed and sent for overhaul. Cannot remember the exact cycles, but our aircraft tend to have their gear changed every 8 years, or thereabouts.

Pin rotation inspections are done every 3A check or roughly 1800 hours. They don't have to be able to be moved by hand. Sorry, when I said fuse pins I meant the bushes that they sit in. Of course the pin may move, but if the bush has moved and the sealant broken, it could indicate moisture ingress and thus corrosion.
