Pilots Passing Messages To Other Pilots

What kind of messages do pilots pass to each other or is it always through Air Traffic? I have heard that pilots pass messages about nasty turbulence down the line to others in the airway so they can belt the passengers in, but what other circumstances or situations are there that pilots help each other out? Or should this always be done through Air Traffic, in that you pass them information and they will decide if it is worth repeating or passing elsewhere?

The air-to-air frequencies are 122.75 and 122.85. 123.45 is not a designated frequency for anything, but people use it for air-to-air for obvious reasons.

Under US rules, information regarding hazards to safety MUST be passed on to the ground stations and they MUST relay them to other affected pilots. So turbulence, icing, windshear and things like that are usually just given over the ATC frequency in use in that place.

Chat is another matter. In quiet times or remote areas, a very limited amount of it might be tolerated on ATC. Else - the frequencies above.

Well I am sure those commercial pilots that fly over areas in the day time of countries that are on the "we want to know what they are up to" list probably see things from time to time that they might think would be of interest, or maybe the countries that are of interest don't allow any flights anywhere close to these kind of places....

While taxiing out in sequence behind a Lufthansa airliner at Frankfurt, a C-130 crew noticed something. Not wanting to cause too much embarrassment by going thru the controller, the 130 crew simply called the Lufthansa aircraft on the tower frequency: "Lufthansa aircraft, Herky on 123." No reply.

They repeated the transmission and again there was no reply. Instead, Luftansa's response was: "Frankfurt tower, please advise that the professional pilots of Lufthansa do not engage in unprofessional conversations over the radio."

The 130 pilot quickly replied: "Frankfurt tower, can you please relay to the professional pilots of the Lufthansa aircraft that their nose gear pin is still installed?"

I wouldn't have thought they'd want to go talking to everyone within earshot in those circumstances - they're open frequencies.

It is an old one and it is too good not to be true - in some version.

I did have a similar thing happen once, without the radio barbs. I was taxiing out at LAX behind a Varig 747. They had one tire on the body gear that was just rags, flailing as they rolled along. I tried a couple of times to get them to come up 123.45 but they didn't. I thought it was the language barrier, turned out they were already on tower a mile from the runway. Anyway I finally did tell ground control about their tire, he put the glasses on it and told them to turn around and change it before they departed.

The tire might not have blown but it sure would have left a lot of rubber on the runway.

Similar situation taxiing behind a C-130 at Tan Son Nhut. There was fluid pouring from their left main gear well. I advised ground contol and the herk replies "Tell the wee one that is condensation from our air conditioning unit."  mad

A decapping could not have occured on Taxing.So Mx would def be aware of the Tire,unless they slept over the check.

Similiar situation.I noticed white smoke emitting from the Wheel well of an Aircraft belonging to a famous operator taxying past.It looked like a Hydraulic leak in the MWW causing those white fumes.When I told the Mx staff of that Airline,they looked at each other amused & said it was the breather outlet Air & walked off.
Well they realised 5 minutes later when the Aircraft returned,The smiles were missing then  Smile

Oh yeah, it's true. Just replace "Lufthansa", "Frankfurt", and "C-130" with other airlines/branches of service/airfields/airframes. Heard it many times; in fact we were the target once... but the statute of limitations hasn't run out on that story yet!
