With the Launch of the 737-700ER I began to dig on info on the 737 series and accepted that there are two wings for the NG family, until now I have noticed that in the specifications on the Boeing site all models have the same wingspan.

Could some one please point out what are the differences between the wings of the 700 and 800.

Thanks a lot.

The differences are not related to wingspan, profile, etc, but to the wing structure.

The 738 has additional reinforcements to strenghten the wing for lifting higher gross weights. The 73G does not need this extra weight, so two relativly common wings are produced. The BBJ and now 737-700ER apply the -800 wing reinforcement on the -700 fuselage.

It's possible we may see an even stronger "third" wing for the 737NG. The wing reinforcements applied to the 737-900ER and 737-MMA could be incorperated to the 738, the so-called "737-800ERX."

Thanks for the reply DfwRewevolution.

I believe that the ER, even that is not revolutionary since really is just is a BBJ, will serve well airlines that max out the 700 in terms of payload.

I'd venture a guess that the "Reinforcement" is done through using thicker gauge metal during the build up of the wing, rather than the use of doublers or extensive use of extra structure. That would give added strength without as much weight or loss of internal volume. Keep in mind this is only a guess.

Isn't the skin thickness more on the -800? I read that somewhere, but no reference.

I read somewhere the skins are slightly thicker, but I have no reference for that.
