so how exactly does a LD1 manage to get more volume than a LD3 if the height and base size are the same????

an ld1 container is for 747 lower deck only (if loaded in pairs). the base is indeed the same, but the "nose" is bigger

The width of a LD1, including the contour (or overhang), is 92 inches, compared to 70 inches on the LD3.

I believe the entire 777 family can take a single line of LD1s in the lower cargo hold. The contoured side need to be pointed inward because the contour of the lower cargo hold is only big enough for the contour of LD3s and LD6s.

But I thought the asset of the 777F was that it could take them on the main deck like the 747F.

LD1/LD3 cannot be loaded on the maindeck of a 747F. Only containers/pallets with a 88x125/96x125 base.

Other uld's are 20ft pllt and 16ft pllt.

Okay, I'm probably confusing names. I remember a discussion a while back around the time of the 777F launch about its potential and conversely any possible competition from Airbus with the A340. Someone said that the 777F could carry a type of container on the main deck that the 747F could as well, but any A340F wouldn't be able to because of the narrower fuselage.

That would be pallets built up to the 747 max of 10ft. That and AMJs side-by-side, which DC-10Fs, MD-11Fs, 747Fs, and A380Fs can do. The contour of the A300F doesn't allow for AMJs to be loaded side-by-side and since the A340 and A330 use the same fuselage as the A300, it would be the same.

but 10ft pallets on the 777 will need a special contour, you can't put two 10ft high cubes in a 777F identical to those on a 747,
