I was wondering if you could help me out with
something. I understand the basic concept of CI in
the FMC, however, I'm still unsure of how it works.
From what I understand it can be a number from 0 to
999(9999-depending on the FMC model) 0 resulting in
a slower climb/crz speed and faster des., and 999
resulting in a fast climb/crz speed and slower des.
Is this about right?
If can help me out with any further information, I
would really appreciate as I fly for Southwest
Virtual and I know they us 28 for 737-300/500 and 36
for the -700 which I'm not sure what that means.

The cost index is used to calculate ECON climb and cruise speeds. The value
reflects the relative impacts on overall trip cost of fuel cost as compared to other direct hourly operating costs. ( maintaince etc...)
Enter the cost index for ECON calculations.
Entry is required to enable use of VNAV mode.
Valid entries are 0 to 200. Entry of 0 causes the ECON speed to be MAX RANGE;
200 results in a minimum time flight.
Entry of a CO ROUTE on RTE page causes any company stored value of cost
index to be automatically displayed. A manual entry has priority.
The economy speed is based on the flight crew CDU–entered cost index. A low cost index reflects high fuel costs and results in a lower cruise speed.

Thanks guys, I appreciate your help. I understand now how CI works. I mean, I sort of knew before since I had to have a clue to be able to fly the PMDG 737, right? but this helps to make it a bit more clear.
I gave up trying to fly the heavies since they're just too "bulky" for me...I think I'll be happy staying with SW Virtual and flying the 737's since I don't have to worry about multiple CI numbers to remember...only 2 (28 and 36) for the 737-300/500 and -700 respectively.
