NZ flies a 767 thrice weekly PPT-LAX, which means a bit of a dogleg to stay within the 180-minute (?) ETOPS range.
http://www.flightaware.com showed the following route for the eastward flight a couple days ago:
MOMBO AGPOM 3-30 N 144-00 W CARLS B200 BENTS B200 AMATT B200 FICKY
Dunno what the lat-lons are for MOMBO and AGPOM so can't say for sure how far they're getting from an airport down there, but it looks like they are slightly exceeding 1200 nm from PPT and ITO. So: is the 767 allowed to exceed 1200 nm, or are they using Christmas Island, which is much closer?
If B200 runs direct from BENTS to AMATT, then at one point along there they're 1203 nm from LAX, ITO and SAN. But the Navy's 10000-ft runway on San Nicolas is plenty close enough. Are they allowed to use it for ETOPS?
