I work for an airline's maintenance and have the priviledge of dealing with the worst (and laziest) structural engineer. I do not have a background in the structures and corrosion, but do need some familiarization with this to perform my role. I would like some ideas of where to get training on corrosion and structures so I can understand this stuff better.

heres training, alocrom and reprotect everything properly and you wont have such a problem ! lazy people dont. Sad
There must be loads of stuff on corrosion on the search engines

You need to get the SRM (structures repair manual) for the type of aircraft you are working on. Read it top to bottom, front to back. You will find a wealth of information on identifying and dealing with different types of corrosion.
You can also call the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics. Tell them you would like to purchase books on corrosion and structures.
Bottom line is, your company and aircraft manufacturer should support you on this.

If you are attending a Professional course,Then your Company needs to Sponsor you.
Also you need to have the Required Qualifications & Experience for the job.

If you want to read for Knowledge.There are a number of Books on the topic available.

Thanks for the number of good posts. This corrosion analysis thing I have been doing has been a battle from the start. It is not my primary role here in my job, but one I have been tasked with by default. Our company been staffed so lean due to cost cutting to make up for fuel prices that the company has no corrosion expert. I have been doing powerplant, hydro-mech systems, avionics, and structures while I have a background in electro-mechanical systems. I was honest about my background when I interviewed at this company and told them my background, but ended up picking up areas that I had no training or credentials to do.

The structural checks have been outsourced to an MRO out-of state. They are qualified to do the work they are performing. But with no corrosion expert here at the airline, the work they do is limited to following the procedures that have been existing. (i.e. no process improvements are being made to better the corrosion inhibiting process and the corrosion finding intervals are too long to permit effective corrective action)

Are the Persons carrying out the check from MRO qualified.If so.Are they following your Scheduled Mx docs.
Has anyone suggested to them Improvements.
