Can anyone please explain the different flight director modes? For example, heading, LNAV, etc. When is the F/D used? Which aircraft have the two bars and which aircraft have the "arrow" F/D? Any additional information regarding flight directors is appreciated. Thanks!

A F/D has all the same modes as the autopilot.
The only difference is that it tells YOU what to do i.s.o. the autopilot.
The F/D is used all the time from before take-off till after landing, except when we want to fly raw data for training.
There are 2 types of F/D, called:
single cue.
split or dubble cue.
On conventional planes, it is the customer who chooses what he wants to have installed.
ON EFIS planes, both are programmed and can be selected (by maintenance only) according to customer specification.
The split cue (two bars) is the most popular, although I feel the single cue (arrow) is easier in use.
Why?
the dubble bar has a major disadvantage: It does not show you bank. It only shows you left or right of track.
