Single Engine Procedures For Commuter Aircraft

Hey Guys,

One of my projects for school is to dig up the single engine procedures for a small commuter aircraft such as the B1900 or CRJ-200, or Saab 340.

1. The scenerio is you're on the approach and you loose and engine and you MUST land. I'm needing the EXACT procedures (which google is giving me no love with) as to what the pilots would do step by step to get the bird on the ground safely.

2. In conjunction with that, what would the EXACT inflight RESTART procedures for that same aircraft?

I know alot of you guys are pilots with the regionals so hopefully you can help me out with those TWO questions.

Here is the Engine Failure During Approach procedure from the AFM of the new Citation Mustang, certified just last week:

Engine Failure During Approach
Emergency Procedure:
1. Throttle (operating engine) Increase as required
2. Airspeed - Vapp
3. Flap Handle - Takeoff/Approach
4. Rudder Trim - Trim toward operating engine as required
5. Throttle (affected engine) Cutoff
6. Landing Gear - Down and locked
7. Landing Distance - Multiply by 1.28 if landing at Flaps Takeoff / Approach
8. Flap Handle - Takeoff/Approach
9. Autopilot and Yaw Damper - Off
10. Airspeed - Vapp (Vref if using Flaps Land)
Procedure completed.

A single engine restart is an Abnormal procedure, rather than an emergency procedure.
Inflight restart - one engine:
1. Throttle (affected side) - Cutoff
2. Fuel transfer Knob - Off
3. Engine Anti-Ice (affected side) OFF
4. Engine Fire Switch - Check Open
5. Air Cond Switch - Off
6. Air Source Select Switch - Opposite Running Engine
Assuming Starter Assist:
7. Gen Switch (affected side) Green
8. Fuel Boost Switch (affected side) Norm
9. Engine Start Buitton (affected side) - Press momentarily
10. Throttle (affected side) IDLE
11. Engine Instruments - Monitor
12. Engine Start Switch - Light extinguished
13. Engine Instruments - Check Normal
Assuming engine starts:
14. Engine Anti-Ice and Air Cond - As required
15. Air Source Select Switch - Both

There is another single engine restart procedure for windmilling airstart that starts at step 7 above.

A dual engine restart procedure is a separate, emergency procedure.

Normally, with an engine failure during the approach, the engine is secured, and the approach and landing is accomplished with the engine shut down.
During an instrument approach, with the types mentioned, the priority is to complete the approach and land safely, not try an engine restart close to the airport.

Engine Failure or In-Flight Shut Down

FOR AFFECTED ENGINE:

-POWER LEVER - FLIGHT IDLE
-CONDITION LEVER - FEATHER/SHUT OFF
-CONFIRM LP VALVE CAPTION INDICATE SHUT

IF LP VALVE CAPTIONS DO NOT INDICATE SHUT:
-FUEL AND HYDRAULIC LP VALVE SWITCHES - SHUT

NOTE: PROPELLER MAY STILL ROTATE SLOWLY.

-FLOW SELECTOR - OFF
-PROPELLER ICE PROTECTION SWITCH - OFF
-ENG ELEV ICE PROTECTION SWITCH - OFF
-GEN SWITCH - OFF

GENERAL
-PROP SYNCHRO SWITCH - OFF
-STBY PUMP AND X FEED SWITCHES - AS REQUIRED

Assuming a visual single-engine approach:

- Select flaps 9* abeam the upwind end of the runway and maintain 160 kt by setting approx 55% torque
- Before descending on the base leg, select the landing gear down, check 3 greens and select flaps 15*
- Call for the landing checklist
- Select flaps 25* halfway round the final turn, reducing speed to a minimum of Vref + 10 kt at 200 ft above runway elevation

NOTE

- During training, the training captain may simulate engine failure by setting 10% torque which simulates zero thrust condition.

- Speed must be maintained at a minimum of V2

There are no "exact procedures"...there are checklists and QRH procedures, but an engine loss is an emergency, and each one is different, as each scenario is different...The amount of parameters involved is limitless; that , imo, should be the focus of your paper.

If the engine loss occurs at FL240, a restart will probably be attempted. An engine loss at V1, probably not.

Even with an engine shutdown, you are still trying to keep everything as "normal" as you can and land as you would land with two engines.

There's more than just the engine shutdown checklist, it's really a series of checklists that are run in the same order - (1) fly the plane, (2) deal with the situation and run the appropriate emergency/abormal checklist, (3) in range/descent checklist, (4) approach checklist, (5) single engine approach and landing checklist, (6) single engine go around checklist. At least that's the way they try to keep it when you're training in the simulator.

Then there's things that aren't in the checklist - communication with ATC and the rest of your flight crew (flight attendant) and obvious things like rudder trim to counter act the loss of the engine and when you reduce the power on your operating engine to land, all that trim is going to start yawing your aircraft in the other direction so you have to be ready to counteract that, but that's not in any checklist anywere.

If you're just collecting checklists:

BE1900

Propeller Lever (Affected Engine) - Feather
Firewall Fuel Valve (Affected Engine) - Pull Closed
