my undertanding is that Boeing will make the cockpit in the 747-8 more like a 777. So will it be easier for a pilot to convert from a 777 to a 747-8 than from a 744???

Indeed it is very similar to the 777 cockpit, but other factors are involved in being rated in an aircraft.

Perhaps flight deck-wise converting from the 777 to the 747-8 may be quicker. But in the other aircraft rating issues, converting between two sister four engined Boeings might be easier.

Remember that a converting from one aircraft to another is not only learning a new cockpit, but also learning the aircraft systems involved, powerplants, flight techniques, emergency procedures, aircraft limitations, etc. These are probably more alike between two 747s than between the 777 and the 747-8.

My perception of these two aircrarft only comes from PC-based simulation, but I would imagine the fact that you sit so much higher up and further back in a 747 would be a fairly big factor. Believing you're, say, 50 feet off the deck when you are actually 2 feet away from it would come as a rude surprise...

The thing is any change to make the 748 cockpit layout more like the 777 cockpit wouldn't bring much change since the 777 cockpit layout was taken from the 744 cockpit. The two already look very alike.

Most of the changes to the 748 would be to change the CRT monitors to LCD, replace the remaining steam gauges with digital ones, and updating the avionics.

In addition there's the new interface. Pilots must get familiar with accessing the different information via the CCDs.

It is. IIRC, part of the reason that the 757 sits so high is so that it can have a common cockpit viewpoint as the 767.

The CRTs were already changed to LCDs on late 744 and 744F deliveries since around 2001, IIRC.

Isnt it a step down on the B757 compared to a Step up as on the B767 from the Main deck/Pax cabin.

Yes. But that might just be the shape of the noses.

Yes, in fact the pilot sits lower than normal in the 757 so that the common window geometry with the 767 can be achieved. The 777 also has the same window layout and the flight deck position is affected by that too.

As for the original question, there's not a huge difference in the displays between 777 and 744, apart from EICAS. The 777 displays were developed from the 744 after all. However I expect the 747-8 displays will be heavily influenced by the 787 flightdeck too (which is a step on from the 777).

The current production 747-400 already has LCD monitors and standby instrument. The autopilot MCP now has LCD digits too. However the PFD/ND and EICAS display layouts are largely the same.

It would be hard to use 777 style EICAS and fit four engines into the display. The 747 EICAS uses strip displays to compact the information. It would be possible to use arcs and pointers, but they would have to be much smaller.

The glass isn't half empty, or half full, it's twice as big as it needs to be.
