Damn shame, his posts were a great read.

He got pissed off by persons on this forum who either didn't read or understand his posts before posting something to the contrary. He was a real pro and an asset to this forum and it simply didn't register with some guys on this forum, who went on to argue with him,not realizing that his info was usually totally correct and thus unarguable.
He's badly missed on this forum!

While he was indeed run off by the peanut gallery, that's not the entire truth. There are (IIRC) two further factors.
- He posted an interesting thread in tech_ops about how he and some colleagues were ferrying a 747SP. This was much appreciated. However the mods felt this was "personal" and ended the thread despite huge "technical" interest. This made him somewhat pissed off.
- I may be incorrect about this but I heard that he took a management position with an airline which precluded him from posting for contractual and/or ethical reasons.
I miss him too. He was a fun guy.

Believe that's correct. The timing just happened to coincide with arguments on the site as well.
Jetguy left at about the same time, no? Sort of a departure of (some) of the old guard in Tech/Ops.

I enjoyed reading his input to the forum, long before I took the initiative to join this past summer. I learned a great deal from that guy (and he also flew one of my favorite aircraft/airline combinations: the Pan Am Boeing 747-121).

I'm quite familiar with the B747Skipper story but somehow I managed to miss his input till after he'd gone. It's a pity when things like that happen but I think we still have a pretty good selection of experts, considering there are more technical sites they could stick to that don't want the likes of me hanging around.

Plus you get way too many in here trying to start A v. B crap that belongs over in the general forum now...

I've noticed recently that there seem to be more threads in Tech/Ops that, at one time, would have been in Civ/Av (or, that actually WERE started in Civ/Av, based on who responded). Have the mods been shifting more threads to Tech/Ops recently as part of a Civ/Av "cleanup" or something?
Either way, I guess it's good that more people seem to be discovering Tech/Ops.
Oh, and for the record, I think the contributors to Tech/Ops are just as good now as they have ever been. People leave; others join to "take their places" as such.
So thanks, everyone, for contributing to this forum (Tech/Ops is the reason I paid to have a username). I've learned a lot over the 3+ years I've been here.

Silly mods !
One of the nice aspects of T/O is exactly that :personnal experience stories . This forum thus resembles the flying club bar where we could have a nice informal conversation on our fav subject.

Nice of you. However please remember I am not a pilot or a tech or a designer. I just have something of an interest in aviation.

The best Skipper story to me was back in the Pan Am days on the 707 flying over the Pacific heading to the west coast when he told the FO and FE he wanted to take a little nap. After he was good and snoozing, they did something with the fuel gauges to make them show empty and even got the heading indicator to show a southerly heading. They then made some alarm go off and when he awoke, they pretended to be asleep themselves. There was a good minute or so of complete panic before they let him off the hook.

Indeed. He had posted a tribute thread to his dad, who originally got him interested in aviation, upon his passing. The thread was deleted, I believe; long story short, he got fed up and decided to move on.
Oh well, like I've said, there's still plenty of knowledge here to go around. Even though I haven't posted much here lately, I still read Tech/Ops quite regularly, and learn something new every time I do.
