Best Maint Services In Outstations

Theres alot of airlines that tend to choose particular 3rd party services at outstations, some of them having great reputation in the aviation industry such as Lufthansa Tecnic, Air France or Virgin Engineering.....who do you think is the one airline pilots and maintenance look up to?

Problem is that the choosing of maint providers , along with anything else, is done to a price. You set the standards, and then the bean counters pick the lowest bidder. Quality doesn't mean for much these days.
The people that get the contracts then have to load up the price by charging extra for everything to make ends meet.
Only the very rich airlines can buy quality. If you provide a high quality service, at a high price, you will go out of business!

From my experience...there are some good contractors out there for line mtx.

But I've only ran across one bad one. One plane was out of service at a outstation because it was low on oil in #1 engine (past the minimum required for dispatch)

They "serviced" the engine #1 with only ONE quart!
I say this because me and another co-worker I work with don't believe they did anything to it other than sign it off.

It was noted with mtx control and in the out of service blocks that they serviced with just one quart.

When it came in for a service check (this flight was about to go on it's leg towards us) Both engines were low on oil and I noticed the #1 was lower than the #2. Both needed 3 quarts each.

I agree about that.

My airline had 2 planes that were scheduled for service checks overnite at a outstation.

There was a few service checks planned for the day at my airport, until we got 2 calls from mtx control saying the service checks hasn't been done on those 2 planes at a outstation and they rerouted them to my airport to get them done...
I think it was the cost of the service the outstation quoted was more than they were willing to pay...

Yes I agree not every airline can choose the best quality but the best price, luckily there are many airlines that can get the best out of both. As far as Virgin Engineering we have come to our highest now serving many airlines in LHR and in the US we are now poviding many others as well, but the competition is big between SWISS, Lufthansa, Virgin and United in the USA.

That's the truth...some airlines just want a contract co. that simply gives them a signed logbook,the best service is work done by another airline.

Horror stories from domestic maintenance providers? Both hangar and FBO/outstation?

Just three weeks ago a flight crew called the FBO out, had a NLG issue with a history. FBO mechanic went in the wheel well (DC9)and brought out ALOT of tools.
Seen some ugly stuff here...

This is total bad workmanship.Making a habit of placing tools in a Tray on the surface helps.

Ah, third party maintenance, that is something I have experienced alot of!! I have had our aircraft into several repair stations and my concise evaluation of a good outfit has to do with: 1. The work they consistantly do. (frieghters, airliners, etc.) 2. How much management is present in the company. 3. How many "gray beards" around.  old 
I have always felt that constant vigilance is the biggest key to getting a good product for money and time spent. Finding a quality product, means that you will NOT pay the least!!

As for contract line mx. The best I have seen are the guys who already work the type aircraft full time(at that airport) and are looking for extra pocket change. These guys have the experience and the mentality, not to mention the connections to tap for additional rescources. Finding the company that has these guys is a crap shoot.
