As a matter of interest, after this morning saw DL17 stopping at MAN en-route BOM-JFK for fuel, do airlines have preferred airports for this sort of thing? I mean, the flight could have stopped at FRA, or DUB, or SNN which are all DL destinations and probably not too far off the existing flight route.

On-line station, use your own contract fuel.
Suitable airport, without performance issues (hot & high)
Friendly government. Good security.
Fuel price differentials.
Landing fee differentials.
Weather.
And some times it is just not multiple choice.
