On all planes (required):
1) Nav lights: Red on left wing, green on right wing, white light (facing the rear) on the tail.
2) Anticollision beacon: rotating and/or pulsating red light, located on top of fuselage or the tail
Required for commercial operators:
- Landing light (optional for part 91 ops, but definitely something I'd want to have ). It is still legal to operate a GA plane with an inoperative landing light as long as you're not using it for a commercial operation...
Not sure who requires these: (probably required at some point):
- anticollision high intensity strobes (white), mounted on wingtips and sometimes the tail as well. Not required for GA, but I'm not sure about others. However, just about every GA plane I've ever flown is equipped with them, and when I fly, I turn them on once I'm on the runway and shut them off before exiting the runway. I do also turn them off inside clouds (the strobe reflecting back on you can be mesmerizing...it makes the prop appear to have stopped and feels like you're on a disco dance floor ).
