Do Flights From Europe To LAX/SFO Use The NATs?

Hi everyone,

I was recently on an AF flight from CDG to SFO and we used a very northerly route (at least from my perspective) - it brought us actually along the north-west coast of Hudson Bay. So I was wondering, if we were using one of the NATs (if so, then probably NATA) or were on a route north of them. So my question is: do flights from Central and Western Europe to California usually use the NATs or rather fly on a route north of those?

Thanks for your input,

It really depends on where the NATs are, and the winds along the rest of the route.. Sometimes it can be more advantageous to fly farther north, other times a NAT will be better.

Check some flights from the LAX and SFO to Europe. Some of them are clearly flying on NAT's. It all depends on favorable winds and recently they are heading further north. Check it on flightaware.com.

Here's a flight from today LAX-FRA:

SEBBY4 DAG BLD KD45Q DVC BFF KP87A FAR VBI ELVEL SCAL CHARN GW 5625N 07000W LOMTA MOATT 000N 05000W 6100N 04000W 6100N 03000W 6100N 02000W BALIX UP59 NINEX UP24 ORSUM UP24 NEVIS UP58 FINDO UM982 TOPPA UL74 MONIL UP62 PAM UL620 ARNEM UL603 TEBRO UZ738 COL T150 ROLIS ROLIS1W

So as you can see this flight doesn't use any of the NATs. But as SB states above, it depends very much on the day and the winds that exist - in many cases the flights will use the NAT tracks.

Flights leaving ARN for the USA, even NYC, do not use the NATs at all. They always fly north of them and join airways over Canada.
