American Airlines A300 Interior Oddity?

Hello. I was on an AA Airbus A300 aircraft on MCO-SJU over a week ago. This was my first flight on one of AA's A300s. However, I noticed something somewhat unusual for a widebody aircraft: the buttons for the reading lights and call buttons are overhead. On most widebody aircraft, those buttons are usually integrated with the IFE controls either on the armrest or on the seat back, at least on Boeing widebodies. Are all Airbus widebodies this way? On my previous flight on Delta on a domestic 767-300 on ATL-MCO, the call buttons and reading light buttons were on the armrest. On Delta's 777s and international 767-400s, those functions are controlled on the PTV touch screens, without using actual buttons. I personally prefer them in the armrests, seatbacks, or on IFE touch screens, as you do not have to reach up.

Personally, I don't consider my A300 flight a pleasant experience. The interior looked cluttered and in poor condition, and one of the lavatories smelled horrible. My previous Delta 767-300 flight was much better, and in fact looked quite new on the inside, with the leather seat covers, clean new wallpaper, and new bright PSUs. The only thing that might have given away its age is the IFE.

As with all aircraft, there are interior configuration options. Remember, the A300 and its variants improved on 70's technology. I have flown on A300's configured with button light controls in the seats and on the passenger service units above your head. I'm sure there are other Airbus widebodies configured similarly.

Sorry to hear that your experience wasn't what you had expected. However, perhaps you should relate your concerns to AA in a letter rather than post your displeasure in this forum.

Well, I was on one of Delta's domestic 767-300s, which I believe are actually older than AA's A300s. However, the interior was completely refurbished and in excellent condition.

AA has stated that they will not update the interiors of the A300s, as their leases will be allowed to expire and will not be renewed. AA has shown strong interest in ordering the 787, and it would make an excellent replacement for the A300s.

I imagine putting the buttons overhead saves some cash. Then again it can be hard to reach those buttons in a widebody.

Don't blame Airbus. Blame AA.

As for the lav, it could easily have experienced an exploding poo device since the last cleaning. Even if I am wearing shoes, I will often carpet bomb the floor with paper towels before I get in.

Seriously, how hard is it to hit that gaping hole? And if you do spill a few drops (hey, it happens), how hard is it to wipe? But noooooo. Urine everywhere and mysterious brown stains. Your mother doesn't work here and she would spank you if she did!

The 300s in the AA fleet are workhorses tooling back and forth to destinations around the Carribean. Not your typical high yield routes. Lots of vacationers and latinos. Not saying these people are messier than anyone else, but the crowd served by nature wears the planes down a bit.

As 1337Delta764 states, refurbishing or even fixing up the 300s is not a priority.
