Flight Ops During Typhoons: CX

With another typhoon barrelling down on us, I got to thinking. During the course of this year, if a typhoon is expected to hit TPE directly, CX has tended to suspend flying into TPE during the typhoon period.

Quite a number of the CX TPE flights continue to another destination (NRT, NGO, ICN etc). In this case, does CX can the whole flight, or is the flight flown direct, simply going around the storm? The A/C CX uses on these flights are quite capable of making HKG - XXX nonstop.

I would assume that it would be less troublesome to the PAX to have the flight completed than to can the flight entirely. I also assume that since the cancellation is weather-related, CX is not responsible for accommodating stranded PAX.


I'm tired of the A vs. B sniping. Neither make planes that shed wings randomly!

Correct, CX IOC takes a proactive approach to this.

Passengers for other destinations maybe placed on other direct services, eg a pax on a HKG-TPE-NRT flight would be more likely to be placed onto a direct service, pax destined for TPE maybe placed on a NRT-HKG flight when Wx is clearing okay with then they would then fly onto TPE with it opens back up.

The problem with TPE in such situations is that Kaohsiung (KHH) is the normal alternate, if conditions are bad a TPE, normally KHH gets pretty full very quick from all the Taiwanese carriers, so you are better off waiting until TPE is open to avoid having to fly all the way back to HKG.

That depends on the ticket the pax has, and if they have already started their journey.
