I was sitting behind the wing of a B737-200 the other day and noticed something. The engine was staring me in the face, yet when I looked down at the ground, the view was not at all distorted by the exhaust from the jet. I could see directly through the wake of the jet to the ground below perfectly clearly. That kind of surprised me a bit. Can someone clarify this for me?

Regards.

are you talking about on the ground or in the air? I assume you mean in the air. The reason is because the plane is moving. Would be the same reason why when you watch planes at cruise altitude with contrails. The trails always start a little bit behind the plane.

Perhaps you were sitting on the airplane in question. If it was above idle the heat waves would be several feet aft of the tail cone.

If you were looking down the tailpipe of a 737 in flight, you would be dead.  Laugh out loud
