What Happens To Old Seats?

As we all know, BA and several other carriers are updating their F and C cabins. In the case of BA, for example, the 744 are gettting new seats. The 777 still has the "old" Club World seat, until the seat passes all the safety rules and is installed in 777 also. My question: What happens to the old seats? Do they get thrown out? Do they replace more worn out seats in other aircraft?

Thanks to all the mechanics who keep us safe at 37000!

Can I have a mojito on this flight?

They either get scrapped, or they get refurbished. A shipset of seats takes up a lot of space. SOme of the "newer" seats like the Weber 7070 series get overhauled and put into service. MaxJet recently had seats installed in their newest fleet additions that came from IB's A343 and 346.

Some airlines sell their seats once they cannot be used anymore. I know when LH introduced the new seats in their short haul fleet you could call a number and buy seat rows... And then have a "comfortable" couch at home Big grin

Some years ago, there was a cocktail bar in Amsterdam, called the 'Boeing Club' and it had, as its seating, retired leather first class seats.
Don't know if it's still there or not...but was a nice friendly place.

There was an Airline Memorabilia Show/Sale in Atlanta last Saturday (Oct 20). There where lots of seats for sale. Delta was selling coach seats ($100 for a double or triple) and a vendor had first and business seats from about a dozen different carriers ($320-$450 a pair).

My uncle used to work at United. FOr Christmas one year he took an old first class seat. Cleaned it up and repaired the tear and wear on the seats and gave it to me. I use it everyday for reading and studying. He even installed a prop up tray table for my books!!!

A bar in Seattle in the 80's called Wrex (punk club, hubcaps for ashtrays) had a video lounge in a narrow room with a dozen rows of 727 triples pointing at the screen.

There was another club with sidewall panels lining one wall.

I also installed a set on doubles from the first 747-100 on seattracks in my old van (now they are installed in my Dad's van).

I had a freind that had a first class seat from a 767 that was being converted to VIP interior, Still had the Person Video Player as well as all the motors and actuators for the lumbar and back and foot rests. We had it hooked up to a convertor and ran all the systems, was the favorite chair during football parties, but the strippers didn't like it too much since it was to wide for a lapdance. HAHA
