Can anyone specify the practical differences between the DC9-31 and the DC9-32 for me? Thanks in advance!

DC-9-31 - powered by two 14,000lb JT8D-1 or JT8D-7 turbofans - MGTOW 98,000lb.

DC-9-32 - powered by two 14,000lb JT8D-7 or 14,500lb JT8D-9 or 15,000lb JT8D-11 or 15,500lb JT8D-15 - MGTOW 108,000lb.

DC-9-32CF - same MGTOW as -32 and powered by either JT8D-9 or -11.

DC-9-32AF - must have same specs as -32CF.

Regards

I may be wrong, but I didn't think any -30 series DC-9s used the JT8D-1. My sources show the JT8D-7 as the lowest-powered JT8D version on any -30 models.

Suggest reading Type Certification Data Sheet A6WE where the differences are spelled out. There are far to many differences and overlapping requirements between the two series to listed in a simple a.net post.

Nice info OceansWorld. Thanks!

I hope you don't mind that I copied your information (and credited you) for my aviation page: http://aviation.rosboch.net. More specifically http://www.rosboch.net/aviation.htm#McDonnellDouglasVersionCodes

You may not be wrong, as in another and more detailed source that's what is shown. The DC-9-30 was in fact launched initialy with the JT8D-1 but was later replaced by the JT8D-7.

So to recap and correct what I said in my earlier post:

DC-9-31 - originally JT8D-1-powered (14,000lb) and MTOW 98,000lb; later JT8D-7 (14,000lb), -9 (14,500lb) or -17 (16,000lb) and MTOW 108,000lb.

DC-9-32 - originally JT8D-7-powered and MTOW 108,000lb; later JT8D-9, -15 (15,500lb) or -17 and MTOW 110,000lb.

DC-9-33 - originally JT8D-9-powered and MTOW 114,000lb; later JT8D-11 (15,000lb) engines.

DC-9-34 - originally JT8D-9-powered and MTOW 121,000lb; later JT8D-15 or -17.

I don't mind because these are not mine. What I've written just above is from : McDonnell Douglas DC-9 by Terry Waddington (published 1998) and in my previous post the details are from the book: McDonnell Douglas DC-9, MD-80 and MD-90 written by Günter Endres and published in 1991.

Quoting FlagshipAZ (Reply 2):

Thanks for that. The DC-9-30s was the most successful version of the first DC-9 generation with 621 aircraft built out of 976.

That's cool, you still get the thanks since you found the info.  Wink
