I am curious; what is the average amount of daily flights an airliner pulls on a given day? Last week I flew an AA 757 that arrived into MIA from SJU, once serviced it took me to PHX. I figured the bird flew into SJU earlier that same day; so as a crew changes the plane continues on until it returns to it's point of route origen?

Depends on a great many things. For example, a medium or long-haul aircraft might only do one or two flights in a day, where as regional aircraft can be up and down all day long. Also depends on the airlines, some get more utilization than others. The airline I worked for the aircraft operating the scheduled flights would normally do 4-6 flights in a day. For example, our 737 schedule would be YXY-YVR-YXY-YYC-YEG-YXY, with a cleaning, restocking, and change of crew and catering during the turn at YXY. Also, for larger airlines the aircraft don't always return to where they started. For example, where I come from Jazz had a flight arriving from YVR at night, and the aircraft would remain overnight and then leave again the next morning. Normally they would have a different aircraft each night, as they rotated throughout the system, with the aircraft overnighting at a different station each night.

At my regional, it mostly just depends on the length of the legs the airplane is flying, as most planes are flying all day long from roughly 5-7am to 9-11pm. This can be anywhere from 4 to 8+ legs in a day.

We pilots on the otherhand usually fly 4-5 legs a day. As hard as we work, our airplanes work harder  Smile

It is rare for us to keep the same plane for more than 2 legs... and our planes quite often rotate throughout the system to different hubs. We just pick them up in the morning and then they make their way around and they are dropped off wherever they make it in the evening. Of course, it is not just random... everything is scheduled a couple days in advance given the current status of everything.

Definitely depends on the regional - I'll be taking the plane out on the last flight of the day and I'm already on the second page for the day - each page on the flight log has 15 lines. or if I get the plane early enough in the day - I'll put two flight entries onto each line in a useless effort to keep the day on 1 page. The plane did 18 legs that day. (The day started at 0440 for the plane - ended at 2330)

Of course me and the FO we were looking forward to ending our day with leg # 11...

Too many variables to list, but just a couple within AA alone are airline routes, type equipment, maintenance problems/scheduling, etc. Provide the flight number and date and I can probably tell you EXACTLY how many flight segments the aircraft you were actually aboard actually flew that day.

Holy crap... seems like those planes would spend as much time on the ground as they would in the air!

Yes, yes I know it's semantics, but don't call QF1 two flights near any Ozzie, let alone one who works for QF. It's not quite up there with spelling QANTAS with a "U", but its getting there.

RYANAIR aircaft operate between 6 and 10 sectors a day but the average is 8 sectors usually averaging 1.5 hours each, the norm is to have four 2 - 2.5 hour sectors with four 1 hour sectors , however a few of the aicraft especially at DUB where there are a lot of short UK flights will operate 10 sectors ! There are also a few 6 sector days which usually include four 3 hour sectors with two 1.5 hour sectors. The schedule is made to get maximum utilization out of the aircraft.

theese are a couple of examples i know of that demonstrate what the aircraft will do over the course of the day
PIK-BVA-OPO-BVA-PIK-BVA-TSF-BVA-PIK 8 SECTORS
BHD-STN-BHD-LPL-BHD-PIK-BHD-STN-BHD-STN-BHD 10 SECTORS
PIK-PSA-PIK-TRP-PIK-REU-PIK 6 SECTORS
PIK-STN-PIK-STN-PIK-BOH-PIK-CIA-PIK 8 SECTORS

Oh boy, sweet subject! I worked for a certain un-named regional whose hubbed in Atlanta and I can tell you that the routing schedule was a bit lengthy. Considering that quite a handful of our aircraft RON in outstations, they usually have a pretty early start with our earliest flight rolling into ATL around 0630 or so...and there pretty much going all day. There would be the off chance that an aircaft would come in, say around 1600 and not due out again until 2000 for whatever flight is in ths skd but more so than not, it would be swapped for something that needs an aircraft. Our ATR's didn't seem to take that much of a beating though.

Also, here's an example of a DL 757 that may do a Carribean run. DCA-ATL-STT-ATL-EWR.

The regional I used to work for on average I would say about 7 cycles a day on our ERJ. Depending on routes. I had seen all the way up to 10 cycles a day.

True. But take a look at Delta T7 fleet. Those things don't ever seem to get a rest (yes considering they only have 8 and they are completely maxed out; and yes I know they just got an LR but it's not in service yet)

Actually, the average length of ALL flights in the USA, mainline and regional, is a little more than 1.5 hours.

Most would think it would be more than that, but the few long haul flights are 'evened out' by the high frequency hourly shuttles on the East Coast, West Coast etc.
