Hi all,

I fly HKG-mainland regularly, but am not a pilot or ATC, just a hobbyist/sim pilot. Just curious about the ATC procedures for HKG-mainland flights. Since you only spend a few minutes in HKG FIR, are there special procedures for the handoff to mainland, so pilots aren't too busy in the cockpit?

1. Do they get a new squawk code upon entering the Guangzhou FIR, or you keep using the one assigned you in HKG?

2. Does HKG departure handoff directly to Guangzhou Control upon crossing BEKOL, or do you talk to Hong Kong Radar as well?

3. Does HKG Radar or is it Guangzhou control assign the metric(feet) FL for mainland(HKG)bound flights?

Are the answers to the above questions the same for landing HKG traffic as well?

Thanks

Typically, you keep the same squawk. Same goes inbound to Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Departure, if memory serves. Inbound to Hong Kong, you contact Hong Kong radar before crossing the FIR (at least 5 minutes I think) and provide them with an ETA for the boundry. Guangzhou still releases you.

Northbound out of Hong Kong, we are typically have to cross Bekol at or above a minimum altitude, and are assigned an altitude in feet. When we contact Guangzhou, we are still climbing, and typically get a slightly higher assigned altitude, only in meters.

That is, at least, what it looks like from the cockpit side of the radio. Maybe someone in ATC can describe what is happening on the other end.
