"Everyone" is looking for more fuel-efficient engines these days, and many airlines are ordering the heaviest versions of the CRJ700/900/1000 (ER and LR) and E170/175/190/195 (AR). How is the GE CF34-8 coping with that, as in powering aircraft at near-MTOW and flying them for 3-5 hours, 3-5 flights every day?
I assume GE has tweaked the engine many times over the last five years to get as much out of it while keeping fuel consumption low. But how much more can they tweak it? Did GE anticipate that BBD and Embraer would require more capable engines to launch heavier aircraft or was that more an afterthought?
GEaviation.com quotes the Specific Fuel Consumption (SPC) at Max Cruise to be 0.68. Is that a "good" figure/number? The SPC at Max Cruise on the CF34-10 (found on E190/195) is 0.65.
