A few months ago I took a flight on a MD-80.
I was seated right in front of the right engine, so I could look at it. I was very surprised to see that the engine was not running troughout the whole flight.
For me, it was very strange. Is this normal procedure?

What you saw weren't the blades of the engine, but fixed blades in the engine inlet. I was surprised seeing the same thing on a DC9 a couple of years ago, but moving over to the other side of the a/c seeing the other engine "not running" too, made me realise that the engine is protected by fixed blades. At least, that's my guess for their purpose, protection against the intake of debris, but I'm not sure on this one.
