When my dad was driving past the gates at T-A of SFO today, he noticed 12 customs agents and a portable X-Ray machine at one of the gates and no aircraft was at the gate yet.
I was wondering what this would be for. Is it some kind of training excercise or is it some kind of new thing there trying at the airport.

Random contraband inspection on an inbound INTL typicaly done at the gate with narrowbodys and at the down belt for widebody container. I have to deal with it about once a week real pain on the butt.
It's easyer to screen as it comes off the plane than trying to isolate the pax from one flight in customs.

My dad found out that it's a new thing that is being put in place at the airport. Its where any vehical that goes through the international terminal area they will be put through the X-Ray machine.

I have a correction to make, the location of this is at a security check point near the TWA cargo building and where AIG parks the vehicals(which is near T-A). My dad said by 1430 they were gone, so I guess they stay in one area for a period of time and then move on to another location.
