No need for FMS training - GPS, etc.

How does this sound:

1. Select AIRPORTS to show on EHSI

2. Adjust heading bug to fly towards KEWR (Newark), and engage in heading select mode

3. You'll become visual with WTC from many miles out- and visibility looked very good yesterday

4. Descend visually

5. Take out autopilot when close to target and fly into building

They didn't need to know about FMS, GPS, but I guess they knew how to turn off transponder - easy to learn on any PPL course, and points 1-5 learn on FS 2000 with 767 PIC -

Does all this sound reasonable ?

It would be interesting to hear your thoughts

or even better... they just simply type KEWR on the FMC and then proceed direct EWR and go for it...

If it was on a simulation, it would be one hell of a show... pity the reality had so many people in it  Sad

How did they get the a/c to fly so low?

is there a minimum height that has to be selected in the altitude window?

There are so many little issues hidden behind flying those two airliners that no FS2000 simulator pilot would be able to fly.
They were pilots, were trained in real airplanes and simulators. They knew what they were doing.

Why wouldn't they just put a gun (or knife) to the pilot's head/throat and tell him to fly to NYC and kill the pilots when they were in visual range of the WTC, disengage the autopilot and handfly it into the building?

Pilots are trained to comply with the wishes of the hijacker. Should this policy be changed??

I would have to say that I consider 99.9% of the pilots of the world to be smarter than average. If the PIC new what the terrorists wanted and him being responsible for the people aboard and on the ground in reguards to the operation of the aircraft. They would have put the aircraft in the bay area. I believe that the pilots were dead before they even took off. Ziggy  Smile

I too believe the pilots were likely dead/incapacitated, as no pilot I know would follow commands (even under duress) to intentionally fly into a target.

That being said, I'd like to state my opinion that any discussions of how they circumvented security and/or flew the aircraft is best left to private personal speculation, and *shouldn't* be discussed in a public forum. Sure, pro terrorists know alot, but there's no reason to give any potential amateurs out there any more info to help them out.

Since we're in a "wartime" posture, perhaps it's best to recall the old WWII adage, "Loose lips sink ships"
