Recorded Announcements

I was on an Air Canada flight earlier this month, and noticed that they had pre-recorded many of their routine announcements in English and French, and played them at the appropriate time. E.g. for landing, there was an announcement to stow tray tables and return seatbacks, etc...

I thought this was a great way to save breath on the part of the flight attendants, and wondered, why don't more airlines do this? (And which airlines also do this?)

Probably because it's just one more thing to haul around and keep up with that the FA's have every capability of doing manually.

Depending if the airline would want to spend on the equipment [& its upkeep] which a FA can suffice for.Its upto the airline in concern.

I know with my carrier (a regional also) while it's a very convenient item to have, it's also serves as a way to make sure that the pa's are being read per regulations (both FAA and Company). Actually the policy at my carrier is that it's used for all PA's when applicable. I know on all of our jets (EMBs and CRJs) have an form of automated demo player. On the EMBs it's basically an auto cd player wired it's the pa system, on the CRJs it's an actual purpose made device which run some sort of digital audio file (aka. mp3, etc.)

It actually comes in extremely helpful when your doing the safety demo. With it ,press play, do the demo at the cues, done. As apposed to saying the demo, stopping, showing the action, repeat about 3 more time during the safety/taxi out demo (especially on the EMBs due to their is only one FA). While this isn't much a issue for 1 flight, doing it for 4-5 legs in a day gets really really old. I've been guilty of praying to a written up player to rise from the ashes and work more than a couple of times.

I for one dislike most of the recorded announcements. At times when the crew is busy with other tasks they are great, but otherwise I hate them. In my books the personal touch goes a long way in customer service, and having a flight attendant doing at least some of the announcements in person is a great way to add that touch.

Just my pair of pennies though.

 checkmark  I noticed that DL has begun to use recorded announcements for boarding at ATL, and it's definitely a step backward.

Recorded announcements do have their place: I don't mind them for safety briefings, since they make it possible for all the FAs to be in the aisle doing the demonstration, but for general announcements, the message it sends is "the FAs want to have as little contact with the passengers as possible" (regardless of whether that's actually true or not).

My airline uses them. Makes sense on a 50 seat jet with one FA (a lot to do). With the 70 seaters though....it just makes the job easier. I have noticed the more senior FA's will still do it "the old fashioned" way. I agree personal touch is nicer than a recording.

On XJ's ERJs, I've noticed that it's what looks to be an Alpine CD player, like you'd put in your car.

On some of our aircraft we have a system that will make an ‘auto announcement’ if a cabin crew member does not cancel it within a certain time limit.

For example on a day flight the seatbelt sign is turned on mid flight, the number 1 (senior cabin crew member) has two minutes to make an announcement otherwise the ‘auto announcement’ system will take over and make the announcement for you – which I HATE!

On our newer B777’s we have a system were I can record welcome announcements (one or more) which are then played at a pre programmed time (say every 5 minutes or more, or less) – it’s a handy system to have and makes it sound personal while allowing the cabin crew to carry on with other duties during a very busy period.

There are of course auto announcements which can’t be stopped, for example cabin decompression and certain other emergency situations.

For a full cost carrier I think that recorded announcements have a very limit use, however I can see where you have more pax to crew ratio then the system could come in very useful – as it does with emergencies.

One thing no one has mentioned is foreign language. I always know I am on the right plane to go home when I hear Stefan making the boarding announcement, the same tape for over ten tears now! He left the company years ago but is still the Swedish voice of BA.
The PRAM (pre-recoreded announcements and music) system is solid state now and ours has recordings in about 30 languages.

Well when I flew for about a month ago from ARN to LHR with BA it was this male voice that I have always heard when flying with BA to/from ARN.

Do you have a Swedish script to read?, or do you translate yourself?

Stefans script always seems to me to be stilted and old fashioned. I know he wasn't happy when he recorded it.

I wished my carrier would use one brand. There is about 4 to 5 different brands on our ERJs and no two operate the same way. Some one who isn't electronics savvy wouldn't have a problem but quite a few of our FAs aren't and quite a few times I've boarded aircraft with the player written up as inop but in actuality are running fine (operator error). The CRJ system is much nicer and more importantly standardized.

On ours we only have 3 languages (English, Spanish, and French), how ever since a majority (98%) of our flights are in the contiguous US, the only time I've used or seen any other language used was the few Mexico flights we do, YUL (well at least i use the French ones), and MIA (mainly due to the high South/Central American connecting paxs).
When we originally were getting the ERJs the Cd's included Japanese and Portuguese (I bet due to the aircraft's Brazilian heritage). But those were deleted after a few revisions to the pas that required new Cd's.

Automated gate announcements have been in use for years at DL.

It certainly wasn't a step backwards to me when I was a gate agent. I'm all about the personal touch, but I found them to be extremely useful, especially during busy periods when I didn't even have time to turn around and rip the paperwork off the printer, let alone pick up the microphone and school people on the food and beverage service specific to their cabin, the fact that there are upgrades available for purchase, or what time boarding is going to begin.

I've never been a huge fan of the automated announcements on board the aircraft unless there's only one flight attendant or unless it's necessary, but in my opinion, gate audio and information screens are some of the best things to happen.

- IIRC, the last DL flight I was on to ATL, there was an announcement made about connecting flights but I can not remember if it was recorded or one of the attendants was speaking live

I take the English version and put it into Swedish/German/Spanish or Greek myself (real time I guess you would call it). I think there is a handbook available if you ask for it – but I don’t bother – you just have to be careful not to get caught out...

I think pax are also more likely to listen to a human – especially when they are 5ft9, blond hair with blue eyes and looking right at you lol A recording turns everyone off I think!

SAA have them but the use seems to be random. I wish they would use them all the time as some of the F/As really cannot speak properly.

From my personal experience...
SkyWest (Midwest Connect CRJ-100/200) didn't have recordings, so the f/a would recite the announcements (throw in a joke here and there) and demonstrate everything at the end.
Midwest has recordings for seatbelts (activated when the seatbelt sign is turned on), safety demo, traytable/footrest/seatback stuff, etc. F/As give arrival announcements, the "please recycle" spiel (at least that's what I call it), and of course uncommon announcements like for delays and such.
Northwest had automated seatbelt messages on their 757s when I flew on 'em in Asia. Scared the crap outta me (pun intended) in the lav (as if sitting on the pot with turbulence wasn't enough...)
ExpressJet had the safety demo recorded.
