So, What Does Mach 6 Flow Really Look Like?

I couldn't think of where else to post this, so I figure it will be appreciated here.

A picture of what a Mach 6 scramjet inlet looks like when it unstarts:
http://adl.stanford.edu/files/MachUnsteady.mov

What we're looking at is a slice through a Mach 6 flow from left to right. The large white blob on the bottom is the top half of the vehicle body (the bottom half is below the video, but it's symmetric). The little white slice coming in from the right is the other part of the inlet (the "ring" part you see when you look at supersonic inlets). The giant purple line from lower left to upper right is the shockwave coming off the nose of the vehicle.

It's running nicely, then they close the throat a little bit and *wham*...unstart.

Not sure how much folks care about the underlying physics, but it makes for a darn pretty video.

Tom.

Nifty...though it would be nice to have a bit more of the steady state flow before they close the throat so we could better see the transition.

What the...?

It probably depends on your browser and Quicktime version but, on mine, I can grab the video slider with my mouse and drag it back and forth to slow down/speed up/pause at the interesting times.

Here's the initial frame:

I'm about 3/4 of the way through my masters in aero engineering (working at it part time). This week happened to be hypersonics, and the guys who did the CFD behind this video are collegues of my propulsion prof.

I just had to let it cycle through a few times since it changes playback speed. Interesting stuff...good luck with it.

It's interesting how far away from the body the flow is deflected and slowed after being separated by the duct...and the huge external effects of the unstart.
