Takeoff Signal Question

Hi Everyone,

I have a question about a signal being given just prior to takeoff. On domestic American airlines (i.e. AA, UA, DL, B6, etc.) there is no signal given. However, when I flew LX, the "no smoking" sign was turned on and off, accompanied by the double-ding, just before we started the take-off roll. Was this performed manually by the captain, or was it automatically triggered by something on the plane, perhaps programmed in by LX? I guess it's a good signal to cabin crew in addition to hearing the engines spool up.

It was done by the pilot I imagine. On almost all flights the FAs are given a signal a minute or two before takeoff so they can perform final checks.
Sometimes in America one of the pax signs will be cycled to signal the FAs and sometimes one of the pilots will make a PA announcement.

On most flights that I have been on, the flight deck crew will use the PA system and say something like:

"Folks, we are #2 in line for departure so we will be airborn shortly. Inflight Crewmembers, please take your seats for takeoff."

I am thinking that if ATC is pushing you to move it (i.e.: you are taxiing to the runway and ATC says early "you are #1 for the runway, no delay, clear for takeoff"), the flight deck crew might just flip the No Smoking light switch due to no time to make a PA announcement.

Thanks for the comments! The announcement is what I've usually heard on US airlines. However, when I flew Swiss BOS-ZRH-WAW and PRG-ZRH-BOS, on all four flights the no smoking sign was turned off either in lieu of, or in addition to, the captain's announcement. Perhaps this was just LX's policy?

On AA flights you will get both a PA and a chime (cycle the seat-belt sign).

At WN we use a single HIGH-low chime in the cabin and then the pilots must wait for the FA's to make a PA "We've been cleared for departure" which verifies we're seated for takeoff and notifies the pax that we're close to taking off.

Depends on what's in the FOM for the individual airline. We had to wait until the interphone light went out meaning the FA was seated, then make an announcement 3 to 5 minutes before takeoff. It varies between companies, but the exact procedure is spelled out word for word.

Exactly, and it has to be signed off by the FAA.

At bmi, on the A320 family, once the cabin crew have reported to the flight supervisor that their respective cabin areas are secure via the interphone, the FS will push the cabin ready button on the FAP (Forward attendant panel) which lets the flight crew know that we're all ready to go. If the cabin becomes unsecure (passenger standing up, medical situation etc) the button is deactivated. As we approach the holding point, the pre take off checklist requires that the cabin status is checked, and the seatbelt signs are cylced off / on which sounds a double chime in the cabin indicating to the cabin crew that we're off. Prior to landing, we get a "cabin crew 10 minutes to landing" PA from the flight crew, at which time we secure the cabin, sit down, call in our checks to the FS who presses the cabin ready button. As the landing gear comes down, the aircraft automatically illuminates the exit signs and sounds a single chime, and the seat belt signs are cylced by the flight crew sounding a double chime (so we end up with three chimes).

When I pushed planes out I sometimes hear on the headset the pilot calls the FA and says its going to be a quick taxi to the runway so be ready after we leave the gate. Out here in MLB 27L is right next to the terminal and if there is no delay they can be there and on the runway with in a min or 2.
