Howdy,

In just a few months, the Ft. Pierce, FL (KFPR) airport plans to open a new runway on the north side of the field that is completely disconnected from the rest of the airport. It will be used solely for touch-n-go and full-stop-taxi-back operations, in the hopes that this will separate training a/c from itinerate corporate and GA flights.

There will be no taxiways connecting this new runway with the rest of the airport, and there are no plans to locate any hanger or ramp space there. Training aircraft based at the field will have to depart on one of the existing runways and then enter the traffic pattern for the new runway once in the air.

If an aircraft breaks down on the new runway and is unable to be fixed in place, it will need to have its wings removed so that it can be towed down a small vehicle access road.


My question is this:

Are there any other airports in the world with active runways that are completely disconnected from the rest of the airport?

Not that I know off, but they were thinking of doing something similar out here in PRC, though it sounds like a very impractical solution. It didn't fall through here since we got another two or thre airports to choose from within 30 mins flying time that are uncontrolled and are kinda like our "reliever" airports when there's 15 of our planes in the pattern at PRC. It can get hectic here.

While, Im sure it will do wonders for the GA traffic, is the delay that big on the operations? Im not sure if FPR has its own flight school on ground, but i know that FIT up at MLB, only sends it students there for an XC flight, and besides that airport there are many to choose in the area. Maybe someone from down the area can shed more light, but as far as i can remember, the few times i flew there it was a non event.

Very impractical, haven't heard of any others.

This will get tricky if someone blows a tire and has to keep it a full stop. From the ballooning I've seen around here, blown tires are pretty common.

Weird, I flew into there the other week and noticed them working on something north of the field that looked like a runway, but didn't look practical to me. I checked out Google Earth later that day and it was not on there. I bet that is what it was.

Well, HIO has a paved pad that they constructed, totally detached from any runway or taxiway, which is about 750' long. It was constructed for use by helicopter students at HIO, who used to practice approaches to landing, landing, and autorotations onto taxiway Alpha, right next to landing and departing traffic on Runway 12/30 (and led to a few too many close calls  Wink ).

That seems pretty shortsighted. You would think that they would have at least one taxiway heading out there. It wouldn't cost much to build one for training aircraft.

Exactly what I was thinking. If there's a "small vehicle access road" that's being built anyways, how much harder would it be to build a taxiway that could handle light trainers?

Out here a fixed time frame is provided for training touch & goes or at a not so busy airfield.

It sounds to me as though the best idea would have been to construct a taxiway, put a big yellow X on it but maintain it such that it is usable for emergency ops. That way the wings don't have to be removed to tie airplanes down an access road.

I don't know about currently but this was done quite a bit during the WWII years to relieve congestion at training airfields.

Indeed, and it's not as though the taxiway would even have to be paved. For decades, people happily operated (and still operate) from grass. Considering how infrequently the taxiway would be used, I think a grass taxiway would work just fine.

Forget a stand alone runway..... KTNT Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport is pretty much disconnected from the outside world.

Why can't they build at least one taxi way back to the main ramp?

That's true. And while it's already challenging to manage airplane with different speeds in a traffic pattern (from slow single engines up to quite faster multiengine planes) they have an ILS approach and quite some private jets rushing in onto the same RWY - needs quite some coordination from the TWR.
