I know with all the layoffs going on right now, the airlines won't be hiring for a while. My Question is how long would it be before they start hiring again? How long will it be before they are through the list of layoff employees?
I ask because I am thinking about starting in a A&P program and I am having second thoughts. I don't want to go to school and not be able to get a job for 5 years after completion. I know there was a shortage but with all these layoffs and 80% less flights, that shortage will disappear. Basically just looking for guesstimate on when off street hiring is likely to begin.
If it's too long I'm thinking of going locomotives.
I'm also curious about how pilots and flight attendents will be affected too, so please tell about how long future postions in other departments might be if you are in the know.

Well, people will still get older...so you'll still have attrition, and once airlines get back to normal (don't think it's going to take more than a year)...expect all those affected to be recalled unless they have moved on and the process of growing to start again.
Don't let these events discourage you, but at the same time...understand the effect that they can have. The more you understand this before you get involved in this industry...is the more piece of mind you might allow yourself if it does happend to you.
It's a great career if you like what u do, but understand some of the things that can occur...such as layoffs, accidents and the effects of them...and the lest not forget or good old friend the economy

I'd say go for it. A and P school takes two years and by then things will be much different. It all depends on the economy...but my guess is there will be a big demand for mechanics not too far down the road.

Don't hesitate to follow the A&P, there is allready a short of aviation technicians. And I don't think this will change in the future. and if you don't mind to make a career outside your country a lot of gates are open in Asia and the Golf and that's where the money is. But before you can go there you will need some experience offcourse.
